Hey guys. Just wondering how everyone who will be enrolling is going to deal with transportation. Should one get a car? The roadways around Austin are crazy and parking around the campus is awful, but once you get outside of Austin everything seems alright. What if I needed to go to a dentist, doctor, wal-mart, or mall? Would it be too difficult to rely on a bus to do such errands? Thanks

I hear the mall and grocery store are very accessible by bus. austin's supposed to be pretty pedestrian friendly, at least UT area anyway.

Public transportation is good and is free to students. My son was going to take his car but has decided that he will leave it at home and use public trans.

On a side note, an RA told us at our last visit that if you plan on taking a car and will need parking you better quickly contact the college and get on the list for a parking garage. It isn't cheap for a garage permit and parking in any of the surface lots is hard to come by during the day.
You can check the rates and types of permits here: http://www.utexas.edu/parking/parking/student/

If you are only going to use your car for trips to the dentist or the mall, you could easily get a surface permit and park across I-35 by the baseball field. There are buses that run from that side of campus all the way around, but you probably don't want to do that on a daily basis, just because of the hassle factor. The garages are nice, but expensive, and if you aren't using your car much, the regular student permits are a better deal.
