Getting away with lying?

I was talking to a friend of mine, when we brought up a student who graduated a couple years ago. This student had perfect test scores and grades, but his E.C's weren't that impressive. So, he basically lied about things like volunteer hours, and he hyped awards up like crazy. Out of HYPMS, he got into 4. I was pretty shocked too learn this. Do people at admissions even check to see if you're just flat out lying on your application? I mean, how can this kind of stuff go on?

If they do call your school, and find out something it wrong, you're done. They will call other schools as well I hear, and have your app revoked.

But think about it, this kid just made up volunteer hours? He said he tutored kids(privately) for 150 hours when he actually charged them and definitely not for 150 hours.

It would be virtually impossible to make up ECs that will impress HYP. Successful applicants with great ECs have national recognition, raves from their GC, tons of awards. Maybe your friend was a URM who didn't look like on on the surface or has rich relatives?

Agreed. Listing volunteer hours isn't impressive compared to what you did volunteering.

Yeah i see this stuff everywhere
I'm sure of the tens of thousands of aps they cant background check them all
but theres some process where they randomly screen a certain amount of aps

so its kinda like russian roulette, if you get the bullet (they check your ap)
just like 1MX said, your screwed big time

if somebody is considering lying just like this guy did, i wouldn't recommend it

^That might be true at big state schools but private colleges do a pretty comprehensive review. Read the book Gatekeepers, it's as though they know you by the end of the process. They don't hesitate to pick up the phone to ask your GC or CC questions.

oh i know plenty of people who have lied on their apps and got away with it. there is a Harvard student that i know personally who made something up about a new national organization that he was president + founder of. he also made up his research experience and listed something like 2300 volunteer hours when in reality the figure was closer to 230.

i hate him with passion...lol

^ He COULD NOT have gotten away with that

cuhs if he did.. its new to me..

no i'm actually being serious. i know him. he and a friend started up the same club at two different schools and on the application he said he created a "national" organization. he said that he spent all of the summer before senior year doing "research" at a lab. there isn't really a way to check that because he never said that he published anything. volunteer work...a lot of people embellish on that

i don't really know how much that stuff affected his admission. he was really smart (almost perfect testing, amazing gpa/class rank)

Oh, i see PKswmr76
ok yeah i guess ppl do get away

i still wouldnt recommend it though

Never Never Never lie about your credentials, ever. It will come out in the end. The liars may get what they want for a short period of time but in the long run, they will be found out and discredited. (I am old, I know).
Be proud of what you have done -no need to make up lies.

^Yeah, that's completely true
and besides...

say you lie on your app and you make it into say... Harvard

you'll be in, but it'll come out in the end because you dont have the work ethic and the talent to make it through you'll only go to a good college and waste your money on each passing semester while you eff up your grades on classes that you just can't handle

IF you have evidence that you have earned some awards, photo copy them and send it. It will boost trust. If you're an eagle scout or whatever, try photocopying your certificate. Think of ways to gain trust so you dont have to worry.

don't risk it

It's impossible to make up anything worthwhile.
Anything worthwhile must have proof.

Mister Sinister^^ i agree with what you say but then again im skeptical. Among the thousands of applications Ivys receive, are you sure they want additional papers thrown in their face......like i don't know how much time they have to read all the applications and decide on who gets in

1mx so give advice on how to send proof without inundating them with stacks of papers

wait all you people who said he couldn't have gotten away with this? Well he got away with it at every college except Harvard, so I'd say he had some success. He made up his own bullcrap non-profit organization and everything. Oh and he was DEFINITELY NOT a URM.

1MX> ........I highly doubt that schools taht found out a lyer will call other school and notify them because I don't think they have the time for that......Yale will probably think to Harvard "Well thats there stupid mistake if they accept that lying kid". And how will they know what other schools you applied to? With thousands of applicants beating at the door I'd really like to find out if they do a background check on EC && jobs especillay

My best guess, and I think someone has already said it, is that it must be random. I'm sure there are SOME checks in place in order to make sure that people just don't make things up. But who knows?
