Getting back and forth from Syracuse

Anyone have any experience with taking public transportation to get home from Syracuse - either the bus or Amtrak. Wondering if its safe and easy to get from campus to the station.
We live in Eastern Mass. and were thinking about having our daughter go to Albany and meeting her there. Any reactions or suggestions?

I’ve used Amtrak several times to get back and forth from Syracuse. I live in New Hampshire and I would take the Amtrak to Worcester, MA and get picked up by my parents. If you order early enough, the tickets can be extremely cheap with their Student Advantage card…if I recall correctly, I paid about $25 for one way last year.

If your daughter does end up choosing public transportation, I would definitely recommend the train as it has power outlets where you can plug in your laptop and listen to music, watch movies, etc to kill time. Also, from my experience, the train is significantly cheaper compared to the bus.

getting TO the public trans at SU is also pretty easy–there’s a bus that goes both to the mall and transportation center (bus and train) that is even free on weekend nights. the one thing is that the train station in Albany is really big, so if your daughter hasn’t traveled alone before I’d make sure to meet her inside…my first time going through there was a bit confusing! train prices indeed are much better, although the times aren’t quite as normal.
