Getting Books at Mich instead of at Home

I have heard from upperclassmen and from incoming freshmen that they do not plan on getting books off amazon, etc. They will just get it from the bookstore in Mich. Is this a smart idea? Will the bookstore really have hundreds of the same book to sell to students around move-in day?

Also anyone know what books are required for Soc 195?

it’s usually a better idea to buy online than to buy through campus bookstores. in some cases, though, courses may use special umich editions, in which case you’d buy them on campus.

Since Great Books 191 uses classics like the Odyssey and the Iliad, it would be fine to just get them online without having to worry about “umich editions” correct?

Sometimes you can get departmental bundles at a discount when buying books on campus. EECS department is offering a big discount for a book I need to get if I buy it through them. Although it might be because the professor of the class wrote the book and is also the head of the department haha.

Buy them online.

The book used for SOC 195 in Fall 2009 is:

ISBN: 9780813519227 Gender play : girls and boys in school, Author: Thorne, Barrie., Publisher: Rutgers University Press 1993

I could not find any textbook listings for other terms. I recommend you e-mail your professor. Who knows, it might make a good impression.

doctor1468, have you bought all your books already?

Also, would you know the books required for Psych 111 for Marion Perlmutter?

or ECON 101 with Malone?

Yes I have bought most. I am just waiting to find out what book I need for an EECS course, and if it is required.

For Psych 111, you need this book for sure: Forty Studies That Changed Psychology ISBN 9780135045077. You can get it as part of one of these packages from the Michigan Bookstore or Ulrich’s: Pkg Psychological Science (W/ Ebook & Zaps)ISBN 0-393-13602-7 or Pkg Psychological Science (Looseleaf & Zaps)ISBN 0-393-13603-5. The latter is cheaper because, as you can see, the textbook will be looseleaf paper organized inside a binder. Note that these packages are 3rd edition.

For Econ 101, I am not completely sure, but I believe this is the textbook to be bought from Michigan Bookstore or Ulrich’s:
Principles Of Microeconomics ISBN 1-1181-3614-4 I am sorry I cannot be more help, as I cannot find the author or other details myself. You could try looking into this old thread- http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-michigan-ann-arbor/605935-econ-101-textbooks.html

I don’t know if the textbook they talk about in the old thread is the same thing.

For Econ 101 with Malone (and Gerson) it’s a book that Gerson is currently working on/editing so you can only buy it at Ulrich’s. Or buy an older edition off from a student who’s taken Econ 101 with Malone or Gerson (I don’t think much content would change in the book from semester to semester - just probably less errors in the homework problems, etc.)
