Is getting C in masters considered really bad? How could that affect my job hunt. Does the fact that I am from a top tier university alleviate the problem a little? What if I graduate with GPA of 3.09, will that be good for job hunt if I am from a top 10 program in engineering? what does it mean in terms of job hunt? Will it look very bad? Will employers ask for transcripts?

A C is usually considered equivalent to an F in graduate school.

Thanks for replying PurdueEE. I know its really bad. I got screwed in the most unfortunate cirumstances. Not because I was lazy or anything. Far from it.

But how does it look when I hunt for job? Will recruiters ask for transcripts? Do I have really low chances for finding a job? The best GPA I can hope for is 3.09

Generally, in grad school, employers aren’t going to really care what your GPA is, they are going to care who your advisor is and what your thesis was. If you graduate, that is generally considered good enough, as you have the seal of approval from your advisor and committee.

What you should be more worried about is the fact that in most grad schools, consistently getting C’s is grounds for academic probation. It seems most places won’t allow you to get a stipend or hold an assistantship if your GPA dips below 3.0.

One of the best ways I have had a professor here put it is this:
“I give an A to people doing PhD quality work, a B to people doing Masters quality work, and a C to anyone else.”

I am not placed under probation. I have a warning status. In my coll the min requirement for Masters is 2.7

I have 2.75 overall GPA

Well I don’t know what “warning status” means, but It sounds like you are at least very close to that range I was talking about. You just have to work to get it up a little bit and make sure your thesis is great.

Most graduate programs will allow just ONE course to be counted with a grade of “C”. In other words, if your M.S. degree program consists of 10 courses, you CANNOT get 8 A’s and 2 C’s. Even though that would be a 3.6 GPA, you would NOT be approved to graduate and will have to re-take one of those C’s.

Thanks everyone for the reply.

The graduate documentation does not mention what you say either. All it says is that, the aggregate GPA should be 2.7 and higher and all courses counted towards masters should be C and higher.

And in addition my graduate petition has been reviewed and approved.

I stand corrected.

I asked a few co-workers and it seems like the policy on ‘C’ grades depend on schools, departments and even down to the major.

Of course that had led to my team trading barbs and wisecracks on each other’s grad school.

I doubt you’ll have a problem finding a job. Employers dont care about your transcript, just what’s hanging on your wall. You may not be able to get into a PhD program, but if that’s not your goal then it doesnt matter.

PhD anyway is not on my mind. I am more worried about jobs and MBA.
