getting classes if you don't attend CalSO session

My son will be a freshman in the fall. He just spent a very successful weekend on campus - taking tours, meeting people.. He would like to not attend a CalSO session and just register for classes online. The CalSO staff have said that he will not have a problem getting the classes he wants even though online registration happens after at least one of the CalSO sessions. Do you think he is at a disadvantage if he registers later than many other students?

Many thanks for your advice.

I did not go to calso and I got into my classes fine. If they start filling up, dont worry, its just that people cant drop once they’ve enrolled until the second/open phase of Telebears. Once the semester begins, many spots open up, just make sure your son is vigilant if he wants to get into a class. Good luck and congrats on (him) getting into Berkeley!

it also depends on how competitive his major is. and which classes he needs. i am a history major and that is not impacted at Cal, plus, i have all of my lower division classes completed. and i think lower division might be a bit more competitive? but i can guess if he is a business major, things might be more competitive. but like the above poster stated, he can always be vigilant and probably get into the classes he needs. congrats to your son and you too. we are so fortunate to get into such a great school.

be sure to check the CalSO website and send them a notice if you decide not to attend so they can set up a registration time for him. there is a link for that on the CalSO registration webpage.
