Getting enough sleep in college

It seems like it's almost impossible to have a consistent sleeping pattern in college since there are so many things going on, i.e. challenging academics, new found freedom, exploring, active social lives. Does anyone have any tips on good ways of catching more Z's? Disregard finals week...no one ever sleeps. Vampires would have a great time at college. :-)

Thanks

I just kept my normal schedule and had fun no matter what the sleep. If I was ever tired, I just caught up on sleep in class or at work.

It is easier to get a good night's sleep if you can force yourself to do your homework as soon as you get home from class/work.

It sounds trivial, but it works!

Try to set up a class schedule where you can sleep in on at least two days of the week. It helps to balance out any early classes you might have.

Seconded...

The joke at UNC (and I'm sure many other schools) is: Schoolwork, sleep, fun: pick two.

Honestly, though, the reason I'm sleep deprived at school is because I stay up all night messing around - part of what college is all about, right??

I agree with getting your work done ASAP - I do all my reading while I'm working out and go to the library in between classes. Once you sit down in your room and start watching TV/talking on AIM/messing around, it's very hard to get up the motivation to do that work.

See I always try and schedule classes so I wake up at the same time everyday...consistency is key with me. but i agree 100% w/ do homework RIGHT after class. the best technique.

I agree with idiias -- I get really loopy if I don't wake up at the same time every morning. I like sleeping in, but if I sleep in half the week and have to get up early the other half, it really screws me up.

"i never sleep cause sleep is the cousin of death"

Just sleep in really late on the weekends to make up for it.

I wonder how you sleep when there's loud room/suitemates.

^ You don't.

my advice? don't go to MIT....

hahahhahahaha

Hey, this MIT student gets 6.33 +/- 0.08 hours of sleep per night on schoolnights, thank you very much!

(Granted, the fact that I know this -- to many more decimal places than I just wrote -- is probably another valid reason for many people not to go to MIT... ;))

^ lol someone's been in too many math classes. Don't worry I have too.

Hee, I know. When you start keeping statistics on various aspects of your life for fun, you know you're a lost cause.

What time do you guys wake up in the mornings?

there's no reason you can't sleep 3-9 or 2-8 at least on "school nights".

6 hours is fine for me, and I max out (aka, can't go back to sleep anymore) at about 8 or 9.

I sleep a lot more in college than I did in HS. In HS you have 8 hours of school, compared to like 3 in college.

the trick is, when you have a test the next day, don't get sidetracked by all the people living within 50 feet of you who do not have a test the next day.

i agree w/ soccer guy:

"when you have a test the next day, don't get sidetracked by all the people living within 50 feet of you who do not have a test the next day."
...go to the library and study

except if I only get 6 hours of sleep, I'll usually have to take an afternoon nap

Try to work out an arrangement with your roommate regarding when lights go out and the radio and TV are turned off. Set a time, and if either of you want to be up past then, go to the lounge or some other open area.
