Im new to the forums, but I had a question for anyone who knows about maryland transportation. Ive been looking around the internet a bit and haven't come across any easy method... I was wondering if anyone knows a way to get from UMBC to college park (preferred), and college park to umbc. Im dating someone and we want to travel to see each other on some weekends, and we're looking for the best method. If there isnt a direct way, is there a place we could meet, like somewhere in baltimore city?

You could easily meet in Baltimore City but I dunno the best way to get from Baltimore City to UMBC (hopefully the person you are dating can figure that out). You can take the MARC train into Baltimore City from the CP station. It’s a bit expensive (5-7 bucks) and runs only weekdays, though, but you could catch it there Friday afternoon and then back Monday morning. The MARC train that leaves from the CP station goes to the Camden stop. Ride is about 1 hr. I’m fairly certain you can take this line back to CP, not just towards Baltimore, but if not there is another MARC line going into DC and you can just metro from whatever stop it takes you to back to College Park.

As far as weekend public transportation goes, I know on weekends you can take the metro to Greenbelt, then from Greenbelt you can take an express shuttle to BWI (Google Greenbelt to BWI or something for the exact bus number; it’s a metro bus I believe). This runs both to BWI and from BWI back to College Park. Is there transportation from BWI to UMBC?

Goood luck. I don’t know what you define as easy but public transportation from Baltimore to DC is just not convenient, especially on the weekends. Public transportation in general is awesome but at the same time can be a ***** compared to just hopping in a car. If you were to visit her on the weekend you really probs couldn’t make it just an hour or two kind thing. Most likely you’d have to spend the night to make it worth the time/even make a bus or train at all!

If you go to google maps and use the public transit option, you can see that you can get from BWI to UMBC using public transit (light rail+bus 77). Now, you’d have to make sure that light rail line and the bus runs on weekends but if it does…

ok so let me see if i can nail down travelling from umbc to college park for a friday afternoon, since ill need to be staying at college park for marching band first semester…

get from umbc to the nearest metro station. Do you which that would be?

take the metro to the greenline station.

take a metrobus from greenline station, which travels to bwi, then to college park.

Well, I was giving directions from college park to UMBC. The greenline station is in college park, across from campus (you take a UMD shuttle, which runs all the time every ~15 minutes, from the metro to campus).

So if you are coming from UMBC, it’s different. You have a couple options. You can travel into the city and take the MARC train directly to the college park metro station. Getting from UMBC to Baltimore city, you need to take bus 77 (see mtamaryland.com). Then, you need to take a combination of light rail and MARC train to get to the MARC train Camden stop. Then you take the MARC train from the Camden stop to College Park (again just use the trip planner on mtamaryland.com, putting in umbc–>college park metro station, both addresses easily found on google). Then you take the UMD shuttle onto campus from there. It is a 2 hr to 2.5 hr trip depending on when you leave. This route ONLY works on weekdays.

A second option: you could try taking a bus from UMBC to BWI. Again use the mtamaryland.com trip planner and put in UMBC –> BWI. From BWI, you grab the metro bus which goes between Greenbelt and BWI (google for the exact number of the bus). You will arrive at the Greenbelt metro station. The greenbelt metro station is one stop away from College park on the green line metro. So just take the greenline metro towards branch avenue and get off at the next stop - college park. Then take the shuttle to campus from there. I don’t know the exact times on this route as it is not a suggested route by mta trip planner, but I do know that it is possible.

As you can see there is no “simple” route from one place to the other and you really need to utilize Maryland and Washington DC’s public transit pages to help you plan your trip. Good luck

Hi thanks for the help, I actually found a great way to get there and back, I just never got around to posting it! It only works on weekdays so i do the commute friday evening and monday morning, but it works fine otherwise. Just in case there’s anyone looking for this Ill write it out:

CP to UMBC
F6 bus from College Park Metro Station to New Carrolton
MARC train from New Carrolton to either BWI (youll need someone to drive you a short distance to UMBC) or Hawthorpe (buses pretty much every hour directly to umbc)

UMBC to CP
the same 2 steps reversed. Its worth noting that college park’s local bus transportation is much more convenient than UMBC’s since it makes its routes more often, so look up the college bus times for specifics.
