Getting Hired at Big 4 with non-accounting degree

is it possible?
if yes, what kind a positions usually these ppl get? with degrees like finance/econ/mis

I’m mostly familiar with E&Y, and for them advisory and transaction services are the only two areas where non-accounting majors can go. TS attracts mainly finance backgrounds, and general advisory takes anything from acct to econ while IS advisory takes mainy CS/MIS.

D1’s boyfriend was hired by Deloitte this last year as an econ major. You can definitely get hired there with a finance or econ or MIS degree. All of the big four do a lot of consulting work that is not accounting related. I will say that the MIS/CIS background is highly valued in those consulting arms. But if you have an econ major and take a handful of computer science/MIS courses along with it, that could work as well. A minor would be good, but just showing some background and aptitude for it would give you a boost.

How much harder is it to get into TA and and advisory than Big 4 auditing or tax?

The consulting arms are more difficult to break into than audit and tax.

I don’t mean to hijack this thread but could you explain the basic difference between transaction advisory, transaction services, and general advisory?

Transaction services is quasi-financial services, especially M&A and valuation. Advisory is largely consulting subdivided into general business and info systems.

And yes, because these service lines are smaller/niche areas they are more competitive. Whereas audit in the E&Y office I’ll work at has a 1500+ person department, advisory has no more than 120 people.

You really need to do some more research on your own to grasp how many different services these companies offer. Go look at Accenture’s website and get familiar with the type of work done by consulting firms. The B4 sometimes refer to consulting as “Advisory” – it is the same damn thing. Don’t get confused by the nomenclature differences.

I could literally write 10 pages straight just on this topic…i need you to be more specific in what you want to know.

Types of services offered through B4 consulting practices include but are not limited to: IT Strategy, IT implementation, Sales and Marketing, Strategy, Supply Chain, Financial Management, Strategic Sourcing, Sustainability, Transactions/M&A, Private Equity, Risk, Human Resource, Organizational Design, PMO, etc etc etc…there are endless possibilities.

If someone will pay these companies to consult, then they will do it.

I was a film major in college, well im graduating next semester and I seriiously want to get out of it and pursue accounting. I might as well finish this I am a few credtis away… even if I pursue public accounting and get good grades and some experience will I even have a chance at the BIg 4 down the road?
