Getting ibanking internship

My question concerns getting an ibanking internship. Everyone says the way to get a job is to get an offer form a summer internship. My question is, what are the primary factors in being offered an interview, and ultimately getting these summer internships? Would doing an internship at a small ibanking boutique in private equity research help? I go to an ivy btw, just to clarify anything. Appreciate any help, thanks

(in no particular order)

Luck

GPA

Prior Experience

Networking

Yes, prior work experience in finance helps. It is essential that HR sees an interest in finance within 20 seconds (average time spent reviewing a resume)

If you have any specific questions, you can PM me. I just finished my summer analyst program at a bulge bracket firm.

My two cents:

I think Luck/Networking is what brings the opportunity.

GPA, and Prior Work Experience are the factors that bring you through the door.

Without luck and networking, your chances are slim to none. But without a decent gpa and some form of prior work experience, you face the same odds.

to answer the original question posed, working at a boutique doing PE research would be an excellent opportunity which would help a lot with post-grad opportunities.

being good looking counts. I don't know how I got in. Seriously. :D

lol...wildflower knows what it's all about.

thanks denzera

I haven't seen it at all (in business..can't speak to Ibanking per say) Most statistics that you will find showing gender wage gaps can generally be explained by things such as line of work (ex: not many women want to be engineers) and priorities (ie women often put their family ahead of work..ie don't want to take 80+ hr weeks..take maternity leave off; take time off to raise kids; etc).

I'm sure there are some companies where discrimination occurs but the most important thing to companies is the almighty dollar and if a woman can do a better job than her male counterparts, she will get the promotions and the money that she deserves.
