Getting In and Financial Aid

Hey, everybody! I am now a junior in high school and my GPA is 4.258, and I am ranked 12th in my class out of 294 kids. I may be able to move up because the GPAs from 10-15th are so close together. I have 100+ community service hours, not counting this year and I volunteer a lot. I have not taken my ACT yet but I am registered for April. If I were to apply to U of M, I would be out of state. What are my chances of getting in?

Also, if I were, God willing, to get in, what should I expect to receive from financial aid? I am one of five kids being raised by my single mom and our income is pretty low. I am also a minority. Would I get decent amount of aid?

Thanks! :)

Looking at your stats and economic situation, I will estimate that your tuition minus your board will be filled by scholarships and grants. You probably will get loans to pay off the board. I suggest you also look into outside scholarships since your situation is very interesting and can win you some extra funds for school.

Thanks for the answer! I really really really really want to go to U of M but have recently been worried about whether it was possible…

considering your fnancial situation, I don’t know what this country has come to if you don’t get any financial aid. Most likely U of M will give you a scholarship if you get accepted. However, its extremely important that you have your mom finish the FAFSA and CSS profile asap.

Also look into private scholarships. Thousands of scholarships are out there that are need-based and since you have pretty good stats, I’m certain you can pick up a few.

I hope so, thank you! :)

ChasingDreams93, I think honestly right now is slightly to early to tell what your chances of admittance will turn out to be. However, based on your GPA and other credentials that you possess I feel that you have a strong chance of getting accepted as long as you do well on your ACT’s meaning a 29+. Also, bear in mind that the admissions process is a holistic approach so they will take everything into consideration. Basically, meaning if you’re weak in one area(not saying you are, just an example here) then you can prove your readiness of becoming a UM student by showing them other areas that you excel in. Finally, if you keep up your GPA, do well on your ACT, you very well have an excellent chance of being considered for some prestigious scholarships, especially factoring in your economic situation and minority foundation as well.

You sound like a great candidate for the U of M. Which state are you from…if it is an underrepresented one like Kentucky…you are a shoe in…Also you have a very good chance for fin aid. Make sure your essays and recommendations are outstanding. Study hard for that ACT (review courses help a lot) and take again in June if you get below a 33. 34 and above will help you get $$$$. They expect higher ACT scores from OOS applicants. My s got in with 33. Also make sure you are taking a full rigouous schedule your senior year including many AP’s and no study halls…also become an officer in one of your EC’s. Michigan looks for the complete package not just test scores. Take the above advice and apply to several private scholarships throughout your community. It all adds up…do not just count on University $$$. OOS fin aid $$$ has dissappointed many a great admitted student. Good luck!!
