Can you still get into a large lecture class if it is closed and still shows being closed during add/drop? If so, how?

First, it’s still the add/drop period and if you frequently check it, someone will likely drop, especially if it’s a large lecture class. Keep at it!

If you are a senior, the professor may be more willing to the rules more for you, especially if it’s a required class. I’ve known professors who will have a senior waitlist or something so that if someone drops, they get first dibs on that open spot. If you are a freshman, the likelihood of getting in is definitely lower since you have 7 more semesters to take the class. E-mail the professor, attend the first few lectures and talk to him/her afterwards. I managed to do this last year, but I think what happened to me was more the exception rather than the rule. I attended the first several lectures, and there were probably 8 others or so who also were trying to get in. We talked to the professor after class, but spaces just weren’t opening. I’m not sure if this helped, but I also e-mailed the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the econ department (which was the dept. for the class) explaining that myself and others wanted to get into the class and also that I was sure the room we were in had a capacity greater than the maximum number of students allowed in the course (which I was, especially since I had classes in that room before with more students). The next day the professor announced that 15 spots had been added to the class.

Anyway, there are a lot of things you can do to try and get in, but your best and most likely bet is to keep checking add/drop over the next several days. If it’s a large lecture, spots should open.
