Getting in from OOS

Hello, I'm a rising senior in a private school in Atlanta, GA. I have good stats, like 2320 SAT, 3.85 w/ ap, etc and all that, including work experience and research with professors. I'm applying to HPYS, and my guidance counselor says they are reaches, so I just toured UCs and other stuff near Emory/Northwesterns level of selectivity. I was wondering if I could safely, assuming my essays are unique and good but not excellent, and my recs are good, maybe great, count UCLA as a safety. I have a good idea
of my chances with other schools, but I don't know how hard UCLA
is for OOS.

I consider Berkeley a reach-match, would that be about right? Or is it much harder for OOS than IS.

NOOO it is not a safety. OOS it is as hard to get into as an Ivy. Berkeley too.

uc's are unpredictable in general...

the strangest people from my high school got into berkeley (by strange i dont mean nerdy...i mean the most lacklustrous minds/resumes) and not ucla, and vice versa

safest: have another safety... (esp if that gpa is weighted?...hopefully not)

and when it comes to OOS, i would say...beware: public universities luff their in-state residents

*it also depends on your major

UCLA would probably be a match/reach, and Berkeley a reach. Your stats are great, but OOS admission at those schools is said to be similar to mid-tier Ivy's. If your 3.85 GPA is weighted, that could pull you down, because the avg. UW GPA is about a 3.9+, and the avg. weighted is around a 4.3.

Good luck!

also UCs don't take recs so even if they are brilliant they won't help at all...

UCLA: Match (out of state)

UCLA is never a safety school, especially for a an OOS-er like yourself. Admission is very unpredictable. Also, Berkeley is not significantly more selective, if at all, than UCLA anymore.

I think that the major you choose will matter a lot more. For example, I applied for EECS/CSE for both UCLA and Berkeley, but was only admitted to UCLA because Berkeley's Engineering is a lot more selective.

i considered UCLA a safety and i'm OOS as well.

but i considered berkeley a reach, and i didn't get in.

(applied to engineering for both schools). i'm pretty sure you can count UCLA as a safety with your stats IMO.

ucla a safety wow... i considered UCR a safety lol i know quite a lot of people that got into berkeley but couldn't get into UCLA, during my year everyone I knew that got into both came to UCLA (including me) and everyone that didn't get into UCLA went to berkeley...

Get more safeties

UCLA wasn't even on my top 7 list. Lol how things have changed. Even after i was accepted to schools it ranked somewhere like 4th or 5th

a lot of OOS students have a different perception of UCLA than most in-state students do. most OOS students do not aim to go to UCLA (as their #1/2) so many simply consider it a safety.
