get a friend to workout with you. its so much more fun that way. it helps if they're a really good friend who you're comfortable with, so you're not embarassed to sweat in front of them.

Definitely get a workout partner. Preferably someone in your own athletic level, so you guys can push each other.

join a gym, so you know you have to get your money's worth.

jenny craig

try running 20 miles per day.

Just kidding :)

Take a really long walk in the park/around your neighborhood (maybe 1hr-ish) or something for a month or two. It's low-impact, and it works like magic. But you have to do it every day, and watch what you eat.

Good luck! :)

Look in a lot a magazines, if you're a female. Right now like every women's magazine has some form of workout in the centerfold. But if you're a guy, um, you could look in like, AXL for inspo. Those guys are buff. The gym is cool too. If you aren't squeamish about being one of the only guys, take a spinning class. Those are REALLY good. And do free weights, not machines. Free weights tend to produce more results faster.

Wake up early (if your not a morning person do it at night) and just go out to run. Get some music going and just run. If your really not in shape start of with like 2 miles. And then start working up. The best part about running is you can run 3 miles one day cause you only have time for 3 or you can run 5, 10, etc. Depending on how much time you have. Like princessbell said your gonna need something to motivate you. And honestly its all about self control, not eating that snickers bar and instead going out to run.

jog up and down steps in your house if you don't have time to go running outside or to the gym. running up and down driveways and doing squats and squat hop-type exercises work too. pushups are good, too.

join a good water polo team! at least it's working for me...i've lost 30 pounds in 2 months

We practice Mondays and Wednesdays, swimming practice Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Saturdays are the most special day...8am at the beach, we run, swim, do pushups, crunches and lunges, all that for 3 and half hours

I dont know if you'll be able to sacrifice that much time, but it's fun...

join a gym.....no matter how much i don't feel like going sometimes, i know i paid $30 for the month so i don't want that money to be wasted

if you're motivated and highly dedicated to getting in shape then get this book: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0809229021/sr=8-1/qid=1145037512/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-7769775-4239938?%5Fencoding=UTF8
i highly recommend it

Eat three meals a day or snack eight times throughout the day. Try not to eat after 12:00 at night, and if you feel yourself craving some food (even if you only just ate a meal an hour ago), drink some water to get rid of the craving. Stop drinking soda/pop, but indulge yourself with a sweet once a day (chocolate bar, slice of cake, and etc.), but don't go overboard. Eliminate white bread, white rice, and any other products that were bleached. Try out wheat bread, brown rice, wheat spaghetti, and etc, it may not taste "good" to you at first, because your so used to the other types of carbs, but you will get used to it.

As for excersing, the key is to burn off more calories than you take in:

Dance classes/aerobic classes/the gym are other ways to get in shape, but sometimes the motivation factor isn't there to actually go to the class.

Get a jump rope and slowly build up the length of time you jump, and you also have control over what time you decide to excersize.

Also, the suggestion of a workout partner is a great idea, because both of you can give one another support.

Working out to music can help you get moving.

Running/jogging/speed walking around your neighborhood is another good way to excersize, because you get to breathe the fresh air and all.

This is all that I can think of at the moment, if you have any questions about some of the contents in my post, feel free to ask.

im not trying to lose weight, but rather im skinny and trying to gain muscle ... like i know just eating a ton of junk food will work to gain weight, but i dont want to gain that type of fat empty weight

You can attempt the Top Shape program by Dr. Joyce Vedral, if it still is being sold.

Ignore most of this thread. I know everyone means well, but "getting in shape" means something completely different for skinny guys than it does for anyone else. I'd like to put on another 15 lbs of muscle before college myself.

That's a link to a $20 ebook. Could you piece together the information in it for free? Yeah, probably. The author doesn't have any special secret, but he did put it all together into a file I could download so I found it to be worth the twenty bucks. Everything he writes is in line with advice I've read elsewhere.

Most of the information is in that guide, but here's my own advice:

If you really want to put on muscle, you have to get over being lazy. I feel like I wasted my first year of gym membership because I was making a half-hearted effort. Going to the gym for an hour a day, four days a week doesn't work for skinny guys. Not without the right eating habits. Hell, going to the gym three hours a day, seven days a week won't work either. You'll get definition, but not mass.

The diet is the hardest and most important part. That's why my own results to this point aren't as good as they could be. I have no problem dragging myself to the gym. But eating 6 meals a day, and keeping track of the cards/protein/fat, I haven't even tried that. I'm going to soon. You definitely should do that from the start. Trust me, if you want to put on good weight, you're going to have to do it eventually. Don't waste time and energy like I have.

Supplements. Don't rely on them. I wouldn't buy anything besides a meal replacement or weight gain powder to start with. Also a good multivitamin if you don't already take those. Once you've been going good for two months or so, then add whatever supplements you want to add. Slacking off on your diet because you're taking supplements is a fatal mistake.

After joining a gym, I would take 2-3 weeks before beginning the real diet and workout program. Take that time to learn all the equipment, get down your form, and just get comfortable at the gym. Also, gather nutritional information and recipes cause you'll need them later.

Being the skinny guy at the gym sucks, I'm not gonna lie. But better to be that guy at 17 than at 22. No one's laughing because you can only bench x lbs. Everyone had to start somewhere.

Hope this helps.
