getting in-state tuition

hello. so I am classified as an international student but I have been living in the U.S for 13 years now. I've been living in California for the same time as well. I have a California state driver's license and an open bank account. I have most of the requirements needed to be a california resident except that i do not have my green card.

I have been admitted to several schools such as Cal poly slo, san diego state, and University of Oregon. I really want to go to oregon but i would not be eligible for in state tuition. I did however get the most prestigious international scholarship there valued at $8,000 and a general scholarship for about $2,000.

If i want to stay in california i would really like to attend cal poly slo. Would i be able to appeal and somehow get in state tuition? I am in the process of getting my green card and as i stated above, i do have most of the requirements to get in-state tuition.

Another question is should i go to university of oregon where i will be paying the less at $30,000 and ask for more financial aid or should i attend Cal poly slo and hope that i can be classified as an in- state resident?

What visa are you currently on? Does the in-state tuition for certain graduates of California high schools law apply to you?

I am currently on an F-2 VISA and will obtain an F-1 VISA once i register for school. One of the requirements is graduating from a high school in california and i will graduate from high school in california.

Unfortunately, California law generally precludes students on non-immigrant visas (like your F visas) from getting in-state status except in a few very special circumstances (e.g. if your parents were faculty at a California public university).

I would encourage you to speak with financial aid officers and whoever-is-in-charge of the in-state classification at Cal Poly, but there may be nothing that they can do for you until you get your green card.

Best of luck!!

what if I applied twice for a green card and both times our sponsor has scammed us?

then you are in an unfortunate situation.

OP is an F-2 visa student, a dependent of a foreign student visa, so I doubted he/she can get the in-state status. That said, OP will have to pay California OOS which for UC it is about 50K/yr and for Cal Poly SLO would be under $30K/yr.

I don’t know how OP can ask for FA, CA in state schools don’t give FA to undergrad foreign students.

F-2 usually are given to spouse or children of F-1 visa.
Question for clboundkid - are you parents foreign students, perhaps Post-doc or PhD students of some universities, since you said you’ve been here for 13 years. Since visa students cannot take off-campus work, how are you going to fund your education?
