I’ve lived in NJ for about a year and my dad and stepmom have owned the NJ house since Sept 2013. However, they both are technically not NJ residents even though they have been living in the house for over a year. Last year, my dad filed a tax return for a different state. He could file it this year for New Jersey. Also, he is self employed. How am I able to get in state tuition?
This document outlines the procedures. http://nbregistrar.rutgers.edu/forms/ResidencyPolicy.pdf
In short, unless you legally emancipate yourself from your parents, you and your parents need to be New Jersey residents for an entire year prior to applying for in state tuition. I don’t know exactly if you need to file your taxes in NJ to be considered a resident or if they need to live here for a majority of the year, but that document should help.
