Getting In The Mood

What do you guys do to "get in the mood" for writing essays?

I have almost thirty essays to write (I'm applying to eight schools and several scholarships). I can reuse three or four of the essays with minor revisions, but there other essays I've already counted as "doubled" that I didn't put on my list. I'm not all together a bad writer, and I'm not necessarily out of ideas. I'm just having a hard time getting in the zone.

What do you do to get in the zone? What music do you like to listen to? What do you like to eat or drink? What do you like to do beforehand? When do you do your best writing?

I begin with brainstorming and figuring out what i want to say, for instance maybe you want to highlight your love for music, inquisitive mind, whatever. Just vocalizing that helps.
As for music I like to listen to classical, especially philip glass, or techno, like the bloody beetroots, to get focused and motivated. Anything that pumps you up in a mental way is good. No Black Eyed Peas or Lady Gaga or whatever the kids are listening to because that will probably make you want to dance (maybe) around. I like classical because it helps me to focus and its not distracting and I find it conducive to thinking. As for my choice of techno, the rhythm helps me focus as well.
To drink/eat I like to deprive myself of food until I finish and i only drink water.
Beforehand, I think about the s hit i would be in if I wrote my essays in december instead of now. This is really motivating. I think about what I want to say in a vague sense and then with the brainstorming eventually comes ideas to make a compelling essay.
I usually do my best writing late at night, anywhere from 10pm to 2am. I don’t know why, that just works for me. I find that this, for whatever reason, gets my creative juices flowing.

Hope I helped
