Hi, my name is mara. I just recently became a freshman in Ridgewood High School in NJ. One of my dream colleges is UPenn. I want to go into pre-med. My dream is to be a general surgeon in a teaching hospital. But, I'm not here to talk about my plans that far out. I was wondering, because I have all these new opportunities, what i should do to get in. How much volunteering, what grades, what programs...and such. Please let me know what i can do to get in, i really want to get in.

Check out the forums for successful applicants who posted their stats. Also, the Penn site has a range of scores/grades that should give you an idea of where you need to stand.

Honestly, if you’re keen on pre-med, I wouldn’t worry about where you spend your undergraduate years (in terms of relative prestige), as pre-med curricula/science prerequisites differ little between schools. Also, your entrance into medical school will depend largely on your science GPA and MCATs, not where you went to school.

It’s great that you’re thinking this early on, though! You’re ahead of the game, so don’t sweat it too much. I say go to Borders and get some undergraduate admissions/college literature to give you an idea of some different schools and what students at each have to say about them, as well as their admissions information/standards. Other than that, just enjoy high school, take your classes seriously, and find some ECs that you love.

cool what scores do i need to get in for the sats and sat 2

I’m sure it depends on how all your other aspects of your application are. There’s no cutoff. Just aim for a pretty high score to be safe, but it’s not like there’s some huge emphasis on test scores.
