Getting in

hi everyone!

my name is Chen, i’m 19, from Israel and really want to go to brown…
i’ve graduated in 2009 with good grades (can’t compare them to the US GPA though).
i’m currently in the army (it is mandetory to serve in Israel for 2 years) until January 2012.
i haven’t taken the SAT yet, so obiously you can’t really chance me, but i was just wondering whether i’m even in the right direction…

schools is israel are not like in the US- we don’t have clubs or sports team or anything for that matter…

well- here we go.

like i said, i have good grades- my school doesn’t rank but i think i’d be in the top 10-15% of my class (300).

by the time i’ll apply i could say i’ve served in the army for 2 years.
i’ve been in the israeli scouts for 9 years, and during that time voulnteerd dozens of times to many places and helped many- including guiding and counceling groups of kids for 3 years.

volunteered in an elementry school for children with special needs.

participated in 2 delegations- one to Los Angeles in the 9th grade and one to Poland in the 11th grade. the delegation to poland was in memory of the Holocaust.

i think this pretty much rap it…
i’ve taken the Israeli SAT and got 721 out of 800.

do you think i’ll stand a chance in getting in?
thank you!

I think that because of all your experiences you would be a good candidate. Brown looks for rounded people, not just people with perfect scores.

I agree with kmerry. Please apply…your experiences are more important than your scores. Brown looks for students with good scores (which you have), but after that, it all comes down to what makes you stand out from other applicants, and I think you definitely will.

We have had several Israeli students, both undergraduate and graduate, at pretty much all points in the last 5-6 years. Can’t say if you are or aren’t on the right track, no one really knows, but I can say that others have walked this path before you.

thanks guys, just hearing i have a chance calm me down…
do you think the age i’d be starting college would be a problem?
i’d be like 22 and the majority of the rest of the class would be 18…

I don’t think your age would be an issue at all. I believe Brown has a housing option for older students if you didn’t want to live with the other freshmen, and no one really cares about age anyway. You’d just have to watch out for everyone asking you to buy alcohol!

You sound like such an interesting person that Brown would be happy to have you!
