Getting Internships?

I really want to do internships throughout my Highschool career, for the experience and for ECs. I am a rising sophomore and this summer (currently) I am in an internship through the school system for the 2012 DNC (democratic national convention). I'm not interested too much in politics (I dont want to be the president, or anything when I grow up) but it was a once in a lifetime sort of chance and I think the whole thing is pretty interest (a complete learning experience!).

For the past few years I've been really interested in programming (though I'm still a beginner) and game design, and in the future I want some sort of job either in the medical, computer/programming/gaming, engineering or business field . It'd be really cool to do any sort of internship (preferably concerning these fields) with a big company. And maybe (though I dont know if possible) one that's out of state where I would be staying somewhere else (provided by whatever company). Any opportunities would be amazing even if they were in my city (Charlotte, NC), but I dont know where to begin, where to apply, what to be looking for (internships at places like Apple, or just businesses that are local), and if I'm a good candidate.

Currently I am a straight A student with rigorous courses, I have no record of bad behaviors (detentions, referrals, or suspensions) since entering highschool.

Internships are very very very hard to come by for high schoolers. During the summer many college students apply for internships and high schoolers often find it difficult to compete with college students. There are a few ways that high schoolers to get internships. You can get them through connections, for example your friends dad runs a small accounting firm, Politcal offices( they really need volunteers during election years) or programs where you pay for them(A very very bad idea in my opinion) There may be some free programs for high schoolers to intern but these are very selective and require applications well in advance. Therefore, you should try and stick with your political internship or see if you know anyone who could provide you with one.

thanks for the reply. Yeah, I’ve been told to meet as many people while doing this whole thing.
But I read this article once where this guy’s son hadnt gotten into business school, because he didnt show any passion for the field. Every summer the guy’s son had done something with drama, and was in all sorts of plays. I dont want to stick with politics and have it interfere with my admissions to a technology/med/business school. Its a great opportunity none the less… but I think I can possibly get some internships through connections (my moms friend is an admissions councilor for a local college and has alot of connections with local volunteering stuff)
