Getting into a major, problem ?

When you apply to certain universities such as NYU which have seperate major schools (ex. Stern school of business) it can be hard to get into the specific school of major but less difficult to get into the uni.'s general school

Question: does this same idea apply when I apply to a uni such as UConn ( which doesn’t have a specific school i applied to) but instead I applied to a specific program/major instead of undecided. Can I be rejected because my grades don’t meet my major program requirements. Is it better to go in undecided then switch into my program later. (Can I call and ask to be switched into an undecided major?) can a uni give me acceptance into undecided instead of my program automatically if im rejected for my specific major program or do I have to call and specify that if I get rejected from a specific program ide like to again he considered for general addmission) (in which i would later switch into my major during junior year)

Sorry long and maybe confusing. Please help!

Or does the admission decision really have no difference b/w applying in a certain major/program from the beginning or undecided, and both are equally considered based on grades etc.

It would depend on the school. Some will accept you into a general category or into an undecided major, other schools will not. If you are concerned about UConn then call them and ask.
