Getting into an Arabic Class that is Waitlisted

I'm going to be in Focus, so my options for when I can schedule my other class are limited. I desperately want to take Arabic, but the only time slot that would work for me is listed as having a waitlist. How can I maximize my chance of getting into the class? One of my primary college goals is to intensivley study Arabic, so I have to start in the fall, especially since you can't take Arabic in the spring.

So, what should I do? Should I e-mail the professor?

There are three sections of elementary arabic which meet at M-Th at 8:30-9:45, 10:05-11:20, and 1:15-2:30. The first section is waitlisted, the second is completely full, and the third is open. I could go to the 1:15-2:30 for discussion but not lecture. So, I guess I'm asking if, under extreme circumstances, one can be enrolled in a lecture section at one time and a discussion at another, if the class is taught by the same professor.

I'm sorry if this is incoherent. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

One final question: If I can't take Arabic at Duke, would I be able to take it at UNC?

I think your most promising option would be to email the professor and explain your circumstances. I am not sure how willing professors are to have students take the different parts of their classes at different times... it probably gets grading and such mixed up. I'm also not sure about taking classes at UNC, but my initial guess is probably not while you're a full-time student at Duke (or any other institution).

Yeah, email the professor and you might just be allowed in to one of the Arabic classes instead of needing to mix-and-match discussion sections and lecture sections. I'm pretty sure that UNC isn't an option unless you want to pay tuition and take it as a continuing education class.

Email the professor.

HOWEVER -- most people who "intensively want to study Arabic" at Duke have to wait until sophomore year to start. It's very common to start w/ Arabic 1 soph year.

I'll e-mail the professor. Thanks for all the advice.

Yousef - I just looked on ACES at the class that you're talking about. I know it says that it has a waitlist, but didn't you notice that it says "0/18" spots taken? If you go to "info," it says that all 18 spaces are reserved for freshmen. You should have no problem at all getting into the 8:30 class. I think the waitlist is because non-freshmen want to get in, so if all 18 slots aren't taken up by freshmen by the end of drop/add, they'll be allowed into the class.

Oh, bandcampgirl is totally right, the 8:30 section is freshmen-only and anyone who isn't a freshman gets put on the waitlist. You can probably get into that one.

Thanks, I guess I should have investigated further.
