Getting Into Barnard With a Low GPA

I want to go to Barnard really badly, but my my GPA is somewhat below the Barnard norm. My test scores are really good, as are my ECs, community work and recs. The low GPA is due to family problems I went through during freshmen to junior years. My father was very ill and then died. My classes were/are high level classes. My first and second marking period grades for senior year are really good. Do you think there’s a chance that I’ll get in?

This is hard for anyone to say. Did your guidance counselor write a letter explaining the family circumstances? That should help.

Good luck. Expect the worst and hope for the best is always the advice that gets us through.

I hope you have a safety school you would be pleased to attend, and you can keep working toward a Barnard acceptance. Update your admissions rep if you receive any honors or great successes.

I got into Barnard with a 3.52 (unweighted) GPA, if that helps. It was decidedly lower than the average GPA of Barnard admits from my HS. To balance it, I had very high test scores, good extracurriculars, and several awards. Barnard is looking at you as a person, not a number. If it’s the right fit for you, you’ll get in. Other than that, I second what mythmom said – you can’t count on Barnard (nobody can), so do find a good safety school that you’d genuinely like to go to. Best of luck!

Thank goodness. I’m a junior and I currently have about a 3.55 GPA. I visited Barnard in the fall and fell irrevocably in love with it, though I was freaking out about how high the average accepted GPA is. It’s good to know not everyone that gets in has crazy ridiculous 4.0s…it makes me feel somewhat better :-)

What if Aoyelove had a 4.0 GPA but low test scores like 1750? How much of a factor do the test scores play in the admissions process?

I honestly think it’d be easier to get into Barnard with a higher GPA and lower test scores. Though GPA is subjective, it still tends to show dedication rather than just pure intelligence.
That being said, Barnard looks at far more than just numbers when it comes to their students.

Mythmom is right- Barnard is by no means a given for anyone. I would definitely have a safety school in mind…you din’t want to feel crushed if things don’t happen like you wanted them to.
I am in a similar situation as well. What I did, was I uploaded a resume on common app, and along with my resume I wrote a five to six sentence paragragh explaining my grades. I beat them to the punch by explaining early on, because most of the time they will call you about something like that. I offered to send in my 6 weeks grades as soon as they came in to show that I will make progress. If I were you, I would do something similar to that. Note- Make sure it’s an extremely brief explanation. Since the app is already done, I would email them offering to send your most recent grades to show your improvement. :)

I think test scores mean a lot. My SAT was a 2110, and I think that was considered on the low side.

I’m a transfer applicant (a current freshman) worried about my grades (A-s in 2 classes but Cs in the other 2)…I’m trying to make my second semester grades strong, and my high school GPA is good but how do I explain my math and french grades?

How DO you explain your math and french grades?? We certainly cannot answer that for you.

Sorry, poor wording on my part. Despite years of it I’m not very good at french (I’m horrible at memorizing grammar) and for math I am not the best at it to begin with and I had probably the worst professor in the department

at Barnard I wouldn’t have to take anymore math (thankfully) and I’m trying to make this semester’s french better, but how do I word that to admissions (particularly math, I don’t want to sound like a brat blaming my prof)

Hey, my GPA is a 3.44 (unweighted) I received a 2100 on my SAT, I have about 600 hours of service, I have multiple awards, I participate in several extracurricular and many of them I lead. Do you think I have a chance?

Also, how complex is Barnard? What type of work do students do such as the work in English class?

How about a student who’s taking a tough course load? (6 AP’s this year and honors last year) who has a 3.5 UW GPA and a 27 ACT? Don’t they look at the courseload or just assume everyone who is applyig is taking top level classes
