Getting into Columbia

<p>Hello, i am currently a sophmore in high school. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what my chances are for Columbia. </p>

<p>Here is my profile: </p>

<p>Ninth Grade-

World Civ- 4.00

<p>I transferred to a different school this year. I currently go to a private school that does not offer any ap or honor classes. It’s a Jewish high school, and its one of the best private schools in my state. I am also currently taking 7 Jewish classes, and i have a 4.00. The grading system at my school is different from my old school. A 4.00 is 100, and 3.9 is 99-98 percent. At my old school anything above a 90 was considered a 4.00. It is harder to get good grades at my school. </p>

<p>I moved from Israel 3 years ago. I am an Israeli, and I am Jewish.
I speak 3 languages Russian, Hebrew and English, and I am currently studying Spanish.</p>

<p>I am taking the SATS next year and i hoping to get a 1350 or above. </p>

<p>Columbia is my dream school, and i want to major in political science.
Do you think i have the chance to get in?</p>

<p>I don't play a different sport every year, i played tennis on my schools team, and i was on swim team sophmore year. In the beginning of the year i switched out of my old school and my new school does not have a tennis team or a swim team. I play tennis on my clubs team. Next year i am thinking of playing basketball but i am not sure.
I want to go on a foreign exchange program next year to learn spanish.</p>

<p>I understand her incentive to doing this earlier on... but maybe that's because I'm also 16.</p>

<p>If I posted my stats and such on the CC boards at the point, it would be so I'd know what to work on the next year and a half and not have it jump up and fly by my face. My mom's friend came over to talk to me about colleges and said, "It's all just a game, and you have to play it, whether you like it or not." By this, she meant joining clubs just to be in them, even if you had no intention of enjoying yourself in doing so (like applying for Girls State... why would I do that? I can't imagine doing anything that would make me more miserable). Getting a head start on knowing what some colleges are looking for can give you time to look around and find stuff that interests you. I'm 16 now, and I want to do a summer program at Columbia; I can't do this until next summer, which is when I'd probably want to do it anyway.</p>

<p>I'm personally also starting early because I've got a grueling courseload for my junior year and just want to get a head start on some things.</p>

<p>Well, I'm not sure whether belonging to a Political group at the age of 16 will necessarily increase someone's chances at a top school. i mean, I admire the iniciative of these young guys, and it's OK to join the Republican Club if they like to, but...is it really that important to mention it in an application? Maybe it is, I don't know. I was accepted to Columbia for grad. studies, and I didn't need to be so splendid, but perhaps the College is more competitive (I don't know). <p>Christianity is certainly compatible with Republicanism and the theological difference between Christianity and Judaism at least when it comes to morals and values is not extreme.</p>

<p>I would like to take a moment to give a different perspective on that statement, video, that runs counter to common assumptions. I recognize that many people may disagree with this statement, but I think everyone ought to give it some thought:</p>

<p>Basic Christian ideals:</p>

<p>Peace is good.
Being rich is bad.
Helping the poor is good.
Treating others as you would wish to be treated is good.
Behaving in a neighborly way is good.
Life is sacred.</p>

<p>(By no means a comprehensive list, but it covers some major biblical themes and especially Jesus's teachings, yes?)</p>

<p>Contemporary Republicanism (as represented by the Bush administration) is not compatible with those values. Note the wars of agression, tax cuts for the wealthy, corporate welfare, support for the death penalty, and unwillingness to compromise.</p>

<p>'Christians' who elevate abortion and homosexuality (issues of morality, NOT government) over the ideas of peace, love, and brotherhood are perhaps somewhat misguided.</p>

<p>There are other reasons to either support or dislike the Bush administration, but I have a hard time understanding how Christianity supports many of its actions and positions.</p>

<p>I've always sort of regarded Judaism as a more.. tolerant way of life as opposed to Christianity, in a way similar to liberal ideas (the obvious example being homosexuality). You never really hear about the Jews being the aggressive ones, do you?</p>

<p>On your note, Alphabet, the fact that Christianity has such a huge influence over our government at the moment is just... augh.</p>

<p>But I'm not sure this board was meant to be about either religion or politics.</p>
