Getting into Film School

I really want to go to film school. Im looking for schools in southern california and new york. The ones I know of are NYU, USC, Cal-arts, Chapman and Art Center College of Design. I have about a 3.4 weighted gpa. What are my chances of getting in? And also, if anyone knows of any other good film programs in these areas, that would be awesome. Or any information on those programs.

First of all, I’d post this question in the Film/Visual Arts section of CC; you’re likely to find more people with direct experience over there.

[Visual Arts and Film Majors - College Confidential](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/visual-arts-film-majors/)

Second, we need a bit more detail about what you’re wanting to pursue. If you’re planning on majoring in film production then you’re going to need to submit a portfolio of the work you’ve already done. The competition at schools like USC and NYU will be very intense, so you’ll need a very strong portfolio.

Third, the majority of college students change their majors after being on campus for a while. Colleges worry that a student accepted for a portfolio based major may decide that they want to switch into something completely unrelated. As a result your GPA has to be at least somewhat competitive. A 3.4 UW GPA is good but the average accepted GPAs at NYU and USC are in the 3.7-3.8 range. At those schools your GPA could be an issue.

Fourth, try the CC college search ([College Search - College Confidential](http://www.collegeconfidential.com/college_search/)) and the collegeboard tools (https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/college-search</a>). Enter in your criteria and scores and they can generate a list of colleges for you to look at.
