Getting into Film School

I really want to go to film school. Im looking for schools in southern california and new york. The ones I know of are NYU, USC, Cal-arts, Chapman and Art Center College of Design. I have about a 3.4 weighted gpa. What are my chances of getting in? And also, if anyone knows of any other good film programs in these areas, that would be awesome. Or any information on those programs.

You should take a look at Loyola Marymount in LA, and take a look at Emerson in Boston, even though it is not in one of your two mentioned cities. If you are willing to look further consider UT Austin. NYU and USC are the two hardest film schools in the country to get into, and USC is a bit harder academically to get into. A 3.4 weighted GPA will not make it impossible, but at both places that is below the unweighed GPA of most applicants. You haven’t told us anything about your SAT’s or film experience. If those are great, it will help with admission.

I have a 31 on the ACT, and have had a lot of experience directing and writing shorts, which is what I think I need for my portfolio.

Also check out the BFA film program at SUNY Purchase. That school would focus more on your portfolio and be less obsessed (than say, USC is) with your GPA. Ithaca College and Syracuse also have film programs and are in New York. I assume you are referring to the state not just the city?

Check out California State University, Northridge. It looks like a great program and with your grades it might be a fit for you.

I do not think your grades are high enough to get into NYU, USC, Cal-arts or Chapman. Chapman & USC are both very difficult to get into.

Hi Brian,

I did not see that you obtained an ACT score of 31. This converts to a SAT score of 2040 which is quite good.

If your resume shows that you are an outstanding candidate such as a winner of some film contests you may have a chance. Somehow you have to explain to the colleges your low GPA; probably in your essays that you will need to turn in with your college applications. I would also suggest that you get your grades up in your Senior year; showing that now you have learned your lesson.

Loyola Marymount, Emerson and Northridge would be good schools to concentrate on. CSUs San Diego, Fullerton, Long Beach & San Francisco all have film program majors. CS Northridge is located in the heart of the Film Industry. Good luck!
