I'd love to work as a software engineer, associate, banker or whatever for a financial firm. Is this a common path at UM? How could I do this?

probably best bet is a hfq-trading, but I think a lot of employers want you to have a 3.7+ GPA with at least a masters.

other than that many CS/math/engineering according to wallstreetoasis are seen as failed students in their field

It’s not common and the finance companies looking for analysts will recruit out of Ross. Why not just get a BBA with a minor in comp sci? It will suit your career goals much better.

I see… So if I want to transfer to Ross as a sophomore, what GPA should I expect to get?

@maizeandblue If I am looking for a Data Scientist job will being a Math major with CS in LSA put me in disadvantage compared to the Ross people?

CSdude- Aim for a 3.6+ with good essays and EC’s to have a good shot.
Ashleymartin- No I think that’s definitely a better way to go about getting into big data than Ross. I couldn’t name anyone in my Ross class trying to go into data analytics and I can’t recall any companies recruiting at Ross looking for big data people.

The OP said he wants to work as a Software Engineer at a Financial firm. It is my understanding that most IBanks actively recruit for Ops positions at the CoE.

Financial Firms do recruit programmers from Michigan, but the pay is not competitive with what tech companies pay, so it can be a bit harder for them to get people.

@maizeandblue Thanks! so if I want to go into Data Analyst job which courses will you recommend me to take as a Math major

Well if he wants to work for a finance firm I’d think most people would be more interested in working front office than opps, which recruits out of ross. He also said he’s interested in being an “associate, banker or whatever” so I’m assuming he means analyst there.
