Getting into food science

How hard is it to get into food science? Is nutrition easier?

I have a 3.69 cal poly GPA and a 27 act

Would it be possible to switch into kinesiology from food sciences, since they are a little related?

Food science is much easier to get into than nutrition. Kinesiology is super competitive.

ok thanks. How are my chances for getting accepted to food science?

I’d say you’re in. GPA and ACT are both above average.

hey thanks a lot! Any other slightly easier majors too get into though? I really wanna get in to this school, since I probably wont get into ucsb or ucsd.

I would not advise applying to the “easy majors” just simply to get into cal poly. It is very difficult to switch majors. Especially to more popular majors.

^^^^Yeah. I wanted to be a bio major, and I thought about applying under food science. However, changing majors might take an extra year of schooling and I did not want that so I went with bio(despite my low stats)

how competitive is nutrition?

I heard that the nutrition program is really, really small compared to food science, which makes it super competitive.

what would be easier to get into, graphic communications or food science?I like both

My guess is you will get into UCSB and that may well be a better fit for you in that you’re not committed to a course of study. UCSB is more flexible when it comes to changing majors and its a fine school in a fabulous location.

I would love to go to ucsb, but I can’t use my 27 act there, since I didn’t take the writing, so I’m stuck with my 1610 sat =( but I’ll cross my fingers

ah is nutrition really that competitive? i applied nutrition ED with gpa 3.89 and sat (R+M) 1230. do you think i have any chance?

Oh great. :frowning: My daughter applied to Kinesiology. Regular decision.

college_bound: yeah, I have a few friends at slo right now, and they say nutrition is a really small major and say you need close to a 4.0 for nutrition.

2Leashes: =/ But hey, you never know.

You can’t say that somebody will get into a program just because their SAT/ACT and GPA scores are high. There are so many factors that go into the admissions’ decisions, such as leadership roles, sports, clubs, other extracurriculars, volunteer work, personal statement essay.

You should not apply to one program because one person tells you that getting into food science is easier than nutrition. Even if the admittance rate is higher for food science, (which might not be true) you shouldn’t apply to it just because of that. I’m sure KoreanBoi92 wants to help, but his advice might not apply to many colleges. Just a heads up.

^
You can kinda get away with it at a school that does not look at EC’s, clubs, essays, etc

But this is a forum specifically for cal poly, and as far as I know, it’s one of the few colleges I know of where you have to declare a major.

Hey I have a quick question for anyone who would like to answer.

Im thinking about doing food science, and wanted to know if its possible to earn a BS in food science, but then work in an executive or managerial position in a food company. Working in a lab my entire life maybe something I might not want to do honestly.

^^^Yeah, it’s totally possible. My bet would be that it might take a few years working at the bottom but you’ll work your way up.
