getting into Haas

I have seen many post on what it takes to get into Haas. I need some advice on what classes, jobs, internships..etc i need to get into haas. I was to become an Investment banker so I need business related internships. I am in the San Francisco area. I will began my first semester at Berkeley City College in the fall and will be taking three breadths (9 units) and one prereq (3 unit). I you want you can post some of the previous accepted students to give me an idea of what it takes. This summer I didn't do much, but volunteer a little.

You asked it before and I answered it last time. Stats of past transfers are easily found by using the search function. I just did it myself to be sure it was there and it was and it was simple and quick. One thing for certain is if you really want Haas is you’re going to have to take some initiative.

I have searched throughout the website, still can’t find one. Post a link.

Admission decisions to the business major are made by a committee at Haas. The selection is based on student characteristics and achievements that are in line with the core values of the business school (they are looking for students who have the right “fit,” students who will contribute to the school and benefit from the education). Study Haas’s Four Defining Principles as outlined at [Defining Principles, Strategic Plan - Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley](http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/strategicplan/culture/) and strive to achieve them in your studies and extracurriculars.

Kmess024,

There is no exact formula, but take Ms. Sun’s advice and use the defining principles as a starting point. The Haas Undergraduate website has tons of useful information to get you started; including the principles. Since you’re trying to get an idea, I pasted my “results” post below. But you have to understand that Haas wants diversity and everyone has different experiences, traits, and skills. No internship in the world is going to help you get in if you cannot first demonstrate you have what it takes to survive academically, then more importantly convey who you are, what your passions are, and what your goals are in your personal statements. Convincing the admissions panel that you have a genuine passion for ibanking (other than monetary motivation) at your age will be quite the task, especially if you have limited work experience.

As far as classes go, assist.org is your new bible. Just live by this website and you will be fine with classes. Watch out for credit limitations. Go get a job and/or start something. ANYTHING. It’s not about what job you have or what event you participate in, it’s about what you learned from the experience about yourself, and what you’re going to do with this new-found knowledge. It’s great that you’re soliciting feedback from others, but don’t follow the crowd; do your own thing and you will stand out. You can message me if you have more questions. Good luck.

Ms Sun gave you great advice and dnolan broke this thread in half. Great advice

I’d say as a guideline

Highest GPA you can earn-3.8 is competitive

educational prep programs-You will most likely be in a few without really trying, but try to get into 4 diff programs. UCB TAP, UCLA TAP, CC’s Honor Program, etc. (They will ask for this info on your UC app). Also you should definitely apply for programs like Cal Summer Experience. It is great because Cal will help you apply to Cal(sweet!) and writing the program down on your app looks awesome. It shows you REALLY want to go to Cal!

Work experience- Major related is a plus but the biggest factor is being able to display in your writing/application the experiences and skills that you developed that can be applied as a Haas student. (My biz related work experience is zero and I got in so don’t worry too much if you don’t have any but your asking questions early so you have a lot of time for internships and such)

EC-ECs don’t have to be biz related either(big plus if they are though). Just make sure you have quality over quantity. Limited space on your app anyway but you want to get across that you are passionate about something.

volunteering- huge plus imo. If you can continue to push the passion and interest through here that would be good. Quality over quantity again

Awards/honors - Keep track of these and pursue good ones. They will ask for this info on your app.

Wow, biggest part right here. Do not take this lightly at all. Start early and ask others to read it over and over. Dnolands list of people that read his PS is a good reference for the number of people but also the kind of people that should take a look.
