I need some help. I just came to USA 6 months ago and am in Junior High School right now. I will be applying for colleges nex year and am aiming for MIT and the ivys especially Columbia and Harvard.

I need some advice from you guys. As SAT english is a little hard for me, and even if I ace the Math section, it wont be sufficient enough to get me into any of those colleges which I mentioned.

If I take the TOEFL and get 100++ and I take Three SAT IIs (Math1, Math2 and Physics) and score high, like 720+, will I have a chance of getting accepted into those Colleges. I actually need an alternative for SAT, and MIT offers it with asking TOEFL and 2 SAT IIs instead of SAT reasoning test.

i don’t think u will be competitive enough without SAT reasoning test…also, getting 100+ in TOEFL is like basic requirement for these schools since lots of international students get over 100+.And getting 720+ in these 3 subjects can’t be considered as high score,at least 750+…aim for 800 in maths as both math1 and math2 are super easy.

@b@r!um, im trying not to consider ACT and SAT Reasoning because their English is a little hard for me, But the TOEFL English seems easy to me, and what I figured out that MIT offers a substitute for SAT reasoning only for international Students, which Is taking TOEFL and 2 SAT II subject Tests. So I want to adopt that. Math is easy for me as well.

Alright so if I dont give the SAT Reasoning test because im an international student and ace the toefl and SAT II subjects, then do have a fair chance? MIT says that this is an alternative for international students, but what about Harvard and Columbia?

Harvard and Columbia won’t even read your application without SAT Reasoning or ACT results. Neither will most other highly selective colleges. If you want to have options between MIT and your local public university, I highly recommend that you buckle down and study for the SAT Reasoning or ACT exam. (The ACT is less heavy on vocab than the SAT and focuses more on grammar. I found that much easier as a non-native speaker myself.)

well yesterday I read a thread on CC in which some one said that he got accepted into columbia as an Internationale with 115 on TOEFL. he never gave SAT Reasoning!

Mind posting a link to that thread? I tried searching for posts with the key words Columbia TOEFL 115 but all the hits I got were from posters who also had SAT scores.

I can’t help the feeling that said poster was not a regular first-year applicant if he never took the SAT or ACT. Transfer applicants don’t always need SAT scores, and neither do international students who are applying through some special programs.
