I was just in the last issue of a local newspaper, frontpage, for a musical achievement. Is there a way to incorporate this into your app or do you just list the achievement?

I would just list the achievement, since the newspaper article is nothing more than a reiteration of your accomplishment. But that's just my speculation.

thanks for your input, rosinyangster!

would anyone like to agree/disagree?

i also got into a local newspaper once (also the frontpage) for my school mural. since i haven't got any major awards for painting, it was something that proved that i was good at painting.

and i also think that getting into a local newspaper is a great way to get involve to your community (since its local :P) it might be the proof for the colleges that you and your community have a great relationship.

Sometimes it's appropriate to photocopy a newspaper article and enclose it with your applications. Before you do, you should be sure that ...

1) the colleges that receive it don't prohibit unsolicited submissions. (Read Web site application instructions carefully. Sometimes it requires a scavenger hunt just to find this info :( )

2) the article is exclusively--or at least primarily--about YOU (and not you and the 23 other members of the Key Club who took part in "Scrape the Gum Off Desks Day")

3) the article says something about you that simply listing the honor or achievement on your applications wouldn't. For instance, does the story point out that this is a rare accomplishment in your region? Does it discuss all the hurdles you had to overcome? Does it quote a teacher, public official, etc. (not your mother) who says glowing things about you?

4) the accomplishment or honor described in the story would be considered impressive at the college to which you're sending it. This may vary from college to college. At the most selective schools, the honor (or whatever it is that got you in the newspaper) better be a Big Deal, if you plan to show it off. For instance, Yale admission folks aren't really going to care if you got the "Drummer of the Month" award from your school band director, but at some colleges, any honor is worth reporting.

Never barrage colleges with a whole portfolio of newspaper clippings. One or two should suffice, and most students should send none at all.

@ Wanji, how could you use this to show involvement in your community?

@ Sally, that is a great idea! I never thought about enclosing a copy of the article. But yes, the article is mainly about me. The award in question is a national award, and i got a whole column to myself. At the end it mentions some other people, but mostly it is about me. The article doesn't, however, really say anything new about me. But based on the other points you make, it sounds like it would be beneficial to my App to include a photocopy.

Thanks for the info guys!

You're welcome, Bigb14. And, you're right ... if your award was a national one, then your clipping may be well worth sending. Even if it doesn't cover ALL of the points I mentioned above, if the honor was a big one and the article focuses on you, then it's probably a good thing to send to colleges as long as the colleges on your list don't prohibit such extra submissions (and most don't).
