Getting into McCombs

Hi all,

I am currently a high school sophomore and my dream school is UT Austin. I know it might be early, but I was wondering what I could start doing now that would increase my chances of being accepted to McCombs. My PSAT score was a 1390, I will have played tennis for 3 years, maybe 1 year of varsity, I am a member of my FBLA team and will join DECA next year. Last year, I made it to nationals in FBLA and I will probably be an officer next year or the year after. I have a 3.8 gpa unweighted and a 4.3 weighted currently. I will have taken 9-11 APs when I graduate. I will join NHS next year. I was wondering what else I could do to increase my chances of getting into McCombs.

Thanks

I think you are off to a good start. I would spend some time tutoring for SAT/ACT. If you invest the time, there is no reason you can’t go up. Continue to establish leadership in your activities. I believe that is important.

@WizKid123 In addition to having excellent GPA, SAT/ACT, definitely work on leadership skills and DECA or a business club will definitely help. My daughter got into McCombs but didn’t make it into the BHP. It’s extremely competitive. She has some leadership skills but obviously not enough. If you can manage top 7% of your class, that would take away some stress because you would be auto admit, then apply early and you will hear back sooner than later. It’s good that you know what you want to study now so you have time to gain more skills. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the reply @SLparent but I had a question. You said if I got in the top 7% I would be auto admit. I know what this means, but my high school doesn’t have a ranking system. I was wondering if this would affect my chances.

@WizKid123 My D’s school doesn’t rank either. However, for the purpose of auto admit, she got a letter from school at the end of junior year congratulating her to be in the top 5%of her class. The school stamped “top 5%” on her transcript when they sent them out to colleges for the purpose of auto-admit.

So, ask your counselor if your school will do the same…stamp “top 5%” or “top 7%” on transcript. FYI, when schools say don’t rank, they do internally…they may not want to advertise it to the public because if the school has a high profile or a very competitive school, it may hurt students of that very competitive school because they will be compared to kids from non-competitive school. For example, if your school is very competitive, the bottom 25% of your class could be the top 25% of another school.

Hope this helps.

Thank you and yes that helps so much @SLparent

@WizKid123 You are welcome. 1 more thing: the top 7% rule is for TX residents, not OOS, and the 7% can change to 6% or 8% next year…it’s a # game.

Ok thanks do you know what it is for OOS @SLparent
