Getting into Northeastern University?

Wondering if any of you could tell me about the business program at Northeastern and my shot of getting in.

I have a 3.5 GPA and I believe is unweighted. (A at my school is a 92). So I believe when I apply it will be a little bit higher.

My SAT scores are fairly average with a 1580, but I am taking them again as well as the ACT.

I have strong extra curricular activities tho.

Class President all four years of high school with a class size of aprox. 630 students.
National Honor Society Member
Spanish Honor Society Member
I have a part time job.
School Ambassador (help with new students and freshmen)
Chosen to be the student representative committee member for the Middle States Accredidation.
Chosen to be one of the student representatives at the Chick-fil-a Leadercast viewing.

Let me know if you think I stand a shot.

My friend is going there next year. Her stats were slightly higher than yours but her ECs were nowhere near as good as yours. I think you have a good shot if you really pull up the sat score. Are you taking any aps?

Your SAT has a long way to go. Average CR + M at Northeastern is 1280

Yeah I have taken at least one honors course every year and as a rising senior I am taking AP Gov.

and note to csdad- my CR + M were my highest of the 3 sections with a combined of I believe a 1150? So only need around another 100 just to get with the average.

you might have more luck with the act. i dont know how competitive the buisiness program is but your courseload doesn’t seem too heavy. One thing my friend did to try to get an “edge” was to complete an internship similar to the co-op programs that they have at northeastern. I don’t know if this actually helped her but its worth a shot and would improve any application.

The BSIB business program for one is very competitive to transfer into, so I don’t know if the entire program is hard to get into. Business is one of the biggest (and probably one of the strongest programs) at Northeastern - this can be attributed to their co-op program among other things. People say that co-op (6 month cooperative-learning ventures, that are essentially long-term internships, they can be paid or unpaid) helps Business majors (and Engineering majors) the most - Northeastern has pretty much the best and sort of the first co-op program in the country - they’ve been at it for a 100 or so years. Northeastern is all about experiential learning and co-op, study abroad, and service learning are all part of this. I feel like all these things are helpful to a business major.

I mostly only know about BSIB (that is, Bachelor of Science in International Business) - and in that I only know what is posted on the website. Since I’ve done more sleuthing than the average prospective student, I can tell you that the BSIB is really inflexible (it’s only real downfall) meaning that you may not have many electives and that you will take classes over certain summers. The BSIB program has you major in Business with a concentration in something like Finance/Marketing/etc. and a track that leads to a minor in a language/etc. that makes it “international” (I believe its Spanish/French/Italian/German/Portuguese or non language tracks of East Asian Studies/International Affairs (though these students must still fulfill some language requirements). Northeastern is ranked 13th in the nation for International Business. Some other programs in Northeastern business are ranked highly as well, and students have won various business competitions.

As for your stats and ecs - Northeastern’s website and/or the Collegeboard says the following about last year’s admitted students profile:
mid-range GPA: 3.6 to 5.1
mid-range SAT: 1850 to 2110
mid-range SAT (reading + math only): 1240 -1410
50% of students in top 10% of class - What is your class rank (if school ranks)?

You mentioned “Middle States Accredidation” so I’m assuming you live in the blue section of this diagram ([Academic Profile | Admissions](http://www.northeastern.edu/admissions/apply/profile.html) scroll down some), but then you mentioned “Chik-Fil-A” which I associate with the South. I believe Northeastern receives fewer applications from these regions, which could be helpful. Your geographic location is kind of important for Northeastern, because they used to be known as a regional (i.e. New England/Boston-area) commuter school, before some major initiatives they made and this recession (yay co-op experience in this unstable job market!) that brought them to U.S. Rankings Up-and-Coming Universities List (and #69 on National Universities yayyy!). With all that said, being an Up-and-Coming university means that admission gets harder every year. Northeastern received more applications last year than any other private university in the country. Not kidding. Their acceptance rate therefore is lowering some each year, as a result, I believe.

You really need to increase your SAT by 250 or more points to be competitive. While this sort of increase is statistically uncommon, someone with your above average grades should have the smarts to give it a shot. Besides, I increased my SAT by over 200 points without actually studying anything other than a little math haha = I BELIEVE IN YOU!

edit: holy… that’s a lotta text ^
