Getting into Notre Dame

I am considering studying at Notre Dame for either postgrad studies or to add another major to my credentials (I am really interested in doing Classics.) I am currently a student at the University of Tasmania in Australia.

Anyway, I finished my undergrad with a history and sociology major. My grades for my undergrad studies were very poor (failed several units in second year.) My results for 2004 were totally miserable; I even got a score of 15 (out of 100) in one unit. But I was able to get my act together in the last year of my undergraduate studies and get a few study scores of 60+.

Last year I did a graduate diploma in history, I was able to get a high mark for the research thesis and I got three distinctions for the coursework component of the diploma (scores of 67, 70, 75 and 87) I had a total turnaround in my grades.

I am now about 75% through my honours year, I have been getting high grades in honours as well, and my lecturer told me that if I keep up my form I have a very good chance of getting first class honours.

Anyway, what would be my chances of getting into Notre Dame? (or any other top notch US university) Would my past mistakes haunt me for the rest of my life and prevent me from ever getting into a good university?

You're a Tasmanian devil.

I had to say that :D. (By the way, did you know that a certain species of Tasmanian devil is on its way to extinction? They carry a cancerous virus in their saliva. They always bite each other, infecting themselves with cancer. Tumor develops on their cheeks so massively that they cannot open their jaws anymore after a certain period of time. They die of starvation eventually.)

I have no idea what your chance is.

You still have to try.

Count me among the confused!

I don't know that any of us know enough about how education works in Australia to give you a great idea of where you stand. However, knowing Notre Dame and graduate admissions (I am currently applying to graduate school) I will do what I can.

I am assuming you are planning on applying for History, right? Our history program is only a PhD program so you will want to make sure that that appeals to you. It sounds like you may have a MA so it would be a good fit there. Also, unfortunately, you will have to do well on the GRE (which I can certainly relate to) http://history.nd.edu/graduate-program/admissions/index.shtml.

It may be a stretch, here are the averages for the program
How high do my GRE scores and GPA need to be for admission? We have no official level for scores, but most admitted students have GRE scores in the 600s and 700s, and a GPA above 3.5 (higher in humanities courses).

My feeling is if you do end up with solid grades in your masters program (try to get an equivalent of a 3.5) and you have a good personal statement and GRE scores that they will still give you a look and it is worth the application. Good luck!

Irish, you're back! :)

I presume you are taking a break from acing your finals?

I actually finished my finals yesterday and got home last night. My friends are all VERY jealous!

However, I paid my dues. I was delayed for more than 7 hours between all my flights, UGH. Oh well, I am back.

I am impressed you are back home a day and are already awake. My own comes home quite nocturnal; the anti-ROTC of sloth!

Congratulations on being finished--you DID get done early...

Unfortunately I have another round of deadlines coming up as several schools have December 15th deadlines. Check your inbox (not yet though :()

Irish is back.....

Glad to see you back Irish--hope your finals went well. Pray for all those still slugging at it.

Glad to be back! I am a bit behind because this site keeps going down on me but hopefully it will stay up! Good luck to everyone on finals!
