Is it impossible?

High school student, BTW.

When did you get the D’s?

For what reason did you get the Ds?

I got into NYU with a D on my transcript and they gave me a selective merit scholarship. In 9th grade AP Art class, I missed the final exam (3 hours of nude life drawing) because I thought it started at 6pm instead of 3pm. I just never showed up or handed it in and it was 20% of my final grade. So I got a D. AP Art was hard, dammit. :(

Without the D my GPA would’ve been significantly higher. I took 9 AP classes and got mostly A’s Junior/Senior year and a 2150 on the SAT. I was also an Intel Siemens semifinalist and had years of scientific research from a prestigious lab on my record. They gave me a science scholarship, not an art one :P

I’m saying you can possible make up for the D’s with a good application. When did you get the D’s? Which classes? What reason?

Second semester sophomore year + first semester junior year. One in Honors Algebra II + one in AP Calc. I just…got lost. =/ Procrastination + perfectionism + personal stress…it just didn’t work. :(

My application is very strong otherwise – lots of national writing awards, two leadership positions, high SATs, most rigorous curriculum. Writing’s my thing, so I know I can crank out some good essays. I’ll get an amazing rec from my AP English teacher. I’m also hooked (URM), so I guess that helps a little.

If it helps, I’m taking calc over the summer and FULLY expect to get an A. Even if it kills me.

And even with the stupid math D’s, my GPA is okay for NYU, I think, around a 3.6 unweighted.

Anyway, what do you think about my situation? Thanks for helping, by the way. :]

I failed Honors Algebra II. Retook it over the summer and got an A+. I think the first attempt comes up as an “R” on my transcript, followed by the A+. In any case, they can obviously see that I did so horribly that I needed to retake it. I also had a C in Honors Geometry for one semester and I got a C in Honors Physics last semester. I have a 3.3 UW GPA and I still got in.

Sometimes there are other things about you that might interest them. Obviously I’m not an engineer or mathematician, and they don’t care because I’m not asking them to make me one.

dreamupsided0wn: Do you mind me asking what you’re majoring in? I want to know the extent to which NYU accepts their students.

Cinema Studies. And my supplements were terrible. I believe it’s considered both CAS and Tisch, so I don’t think I just got in because Tisch wanted me.

I got a “C” in two history AP classes, but I got 5’s on the AP exams because that is all I studied for.

Got two D’s. Both in AP Calculus
Admitted to Tisch.
Admission not rescinded.
D’s happened my senior year.
Also had 3.1 gpa.

It was my portfolio that got me in. Writing was my major, they just didn’t care about grades in math. But I called many many people to make sure, as well as sent a letter of explanation from myself and my principal, even though there was really no good explanation for it.

Applying HEOP, yeah. Applying RD maybe yeah, but you would have to work extra hard to make the rest of your app flawless.
