Getting into NYU

Hi!

Can anyone out there tell me what kind of chance I have of getting into NYU to major in English and minor in creative writing or communications (I would like to go CAS but any school would be fine!) with stats like these?

Background
White, middle class family

Would need financial aid.

Thanks for reading!

If you need FA, note that NYU DOES NOT give good financial aid. It’s the second most expensive school in the country and gives notoriously bad aid. So, if you get accepted, consider carefully the cost of attending. (All bills included, my yearly tuition, room board, etc. is running well over $60,000 a year.)
That being said, you stand a pretty good change of being admitted - your GPA is on target and your SAT falls nicely within the middle 50%.

NYU is my personal dream school (though I applied Tisch ED for the Film program… I hear back in approx. 3 days… fingers crossed).

All of your stats seem right on target. This is the perfect match school for you. You have loads more EC’s and you have a lot of leadership in those EC’s: that’s something that NYU really likes. The person above me is right: NYU is certainly known for not giving the world’s greatest financial aid. (But if you think about it, everything in NYC is a bit more expensive!) Even with your great stats, you’ll most likely have to apply for many scholarships, loans, grants, etc.
I’m in about the same boat as you. I pretty much have the same stats as you. (I had different EC’s and work experience, but I still had lots of them with lots of leadership). But then again, I also had to submit a portfolio in hopes of getting into the #1 film school in the country. Since your applying to the CAS, the odds are more in your favor than in mine! Best of luck to us both!

Im a Junior, and NYU is a top choice school for me too, for business though. I only have one AP and all honors classes besides that, senior year I will have more AP and my GPA is 4.0 weighted with an okay class rank. SAT when I took a practice over summer was 1750 ish, without studying. good ECs unfortunately no leadership roles yet. Do I stand a good chance of getting into Stern, even though it it more competitive than other NYU schools, if I improve my course difficulty and SATs?

Your GPA unweighted should be 3.7+ and SATs should be at least 2100 to stand a good chance for getting admitted to Stern - It’s NYU’s most selective school, by far. And probably, one of the most selective business schools at any college. Advice to you would be to enroll in SAT prep courses and study for the SAT a lot. Your math section needs to be 700+.

everything seems fine except for class rank. Most of NYU’s students are in the top 10%, with the majority of those probably in the top 5%. How competitive is your Catholic school?

thanks everyone for responding!

DunninLA, not to sound rude or pretentious, but my school is extremely competative. most of our top 5% go to Ivy League.

Do you think i can still get in?

Extremely competitive schools send 25% plus to ivies, your school is competitive.

^^ yes. It’s not pretentious to report attendance at a rigorous high school. Good for you. that explains the class rank.
