Getting Into NYU

Hi, I am going to be a senior in the fall and by the end of my year i will have a Cumulative GPA of a 3.11 an SAT of 2000 and an ACT of 27. i will have 5 classes at the local college as well as one AP class. I will also have 5 Extracurriculars under my belt. I know my grades are not good and that was because of some issues my freshman and sophmore year. I have really tried to pick up the slack and work hard my last to years to make a difference in my gpa. Please tell my what i can do and what my chances are of getting into NYU or a school like it.
Thank you.

Due to your low GPA but average SAT and nothing else really special, I am going to have to say this is quite a reach for you but you never know.

I wouldn’t recommend applying. That’s an extremely low GPA for NYU, and not spectacular test scores. If you really love the school, by all means apply, but I think SUNYs would be a better fit :)

Thank you for the reply, just one more question. How much would a very strong essay increase my chances?

No shame in State Schools Christoph

High reach, so I’ll go ahead and say it is very unlikely, but if you love it that much, you can always try to transfer if you do well your first years in college.

I wouldn’t say your SAT is low at all. That’s a good SAT score. Is it good enough for NYU? Perhaps. However, your GPA is low and nothing will make up for it and unfortunately they wouldn’t accept you unless you have a hook - recruited athlete, you’re a celebrity, or have lots of money to donate. Out of the three aforementioned circumstances, being a recruited athlete is a high possibility among the average student population.

Would you have any such special talents?

NYU has sports?

I would say that your GPA is really low for NYU, however, your SAT is not that low. I recommend taking you SAT again and seeing if you can get it up about a 2250. That should raise your chances, although, even with that I would say it’s a reach with your GPA. Make your essay strong and if you can afford the $70 application fee, I’d say apply because you never know what could happen - NYU does place a high importance on test scores so you might still have a chance. Challenge yourself this year but make sure you can handle your load as well.

I dont have any particular talents no, but all I can say is that junior and senior year I did not slack by taking AP classes and many classes to do with what I hope to major in. as well as duel enrolling and taking 5 classes at the local college.

I just typed up something but got deleted so I’ll be quick second time…

(1) Got to agree with kaikai above. Retake SAT or ACT again. Focus on just one test. Pick one, study hard and score higher. Take SAT2 test and submit to prove your case (even if they don’t require, if you have a good score, submit). Also, not sure which school/college within NYU you are applying but some want to see SAT2 test scores.

(2) Don’t apply ED1, ED2. Apply RD. Get stellar grades first semester and submit with your app to show upward trend from your freshman/sophomore years.

Good luck!

Your GPA is really low and you can’t really do much about it now, but try aim for straight As in the fall so you can show colleges that you have improved. Bring your SAT scores up a little more too C:
