Getting into Purdue Engineering

Hey everyone!
This is my first post and I have a few questions about Purdue Engineering.

-First, I feel that I can get in, but I also need to consider any scholarship options and wonder if anyone else has had a similar experience in which they did or did not recieve what they wanted.

32 ACT (30 Math | 35 English | 34 Writing | 32 Combined | 28 Science)
2080 SAT (740 Math | 690 English | 650 Writing)

I took 16 AP and IB classes over my 4 years in high school (I'm only a junior, but I'm in the IB program and my courses are already set) with a unweighted GPA of around 3.78

I not currently sure what my weighted GPA is. I have played hockey all 4 years, 2 different leagues per year, lacrosse for 2 years, orchestra for 4 years, as well as forensics for all 4 years (speech team, not forensic science, lol :P) Chess for a year. Due to IB and School Requirements I have logged over 75 hours of service.

Again, I just want to know my prospects for recieving scholarships. I heard that they recently altered their requirements for their scholarships, so if anyone can enlighten me that would be wonderful.

Secondly, I think I'm interested in Electrical Engineering, but I honestly don't know too much about it. If someone could elaborate on "what" Electrical Engineering is, what job opportunities are, or if there is a specific subsection of this section of engineering or a different section completely that you prefer, please help me out :D

Again, thanks for your answers and support, they will hold great importance in relation to my college choice. Also, I hope I don't come across as snobby by posting all this stuff; I'm honestly not trying to show off or anything, but just want to know what my numbers mean ^.^

I’m pretty damn sure you will get accepted.

Here is the merit scholarship site:
[Purdue University - Merit_Scholarships](http://www.purdue.edu/Admissions/Undergrad/costs/merit_scholarships.html#1)

They used to include minimum GPA and SAT/ACT scores for each scholarship but they changed it recently. I’m pretty sure you will qualify for at least the Presidential Scholarship with those stats.

In terms of jobs and majors look at this site:

Thanks jimgotkp!
That calms me down a bit ^.^
lol

Your scores and course rigor are amazing! Of COURSE you’ll get in!

As for electrical engineering, check out [Purdue University - ECE Undergraduate Office](Undergraduate Office : Undergraduate Programs : Academics - Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering - Purdue University)

It’s the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) undergraduate advisors’ site. It has plenty of information on what classes you can take as a ECE student, what subfields there are, what options you have regarding internships, co-ops, research etc.

Personally, I’m in ECE and I’m focusing on nanotechnology. It’s a relatively new field, it’s pretty exciting and from I’ve been told it’s the next big thing. Though I do take that last bit with a grain of salt

Nanotechnology sounds extremely interesting to me, so that’s definately something to consider.

~Thank you Hermione :D

Thanks for all the help guys
I’m also looking at Rose-Hulman and several other engineering-focused schools.
With the recent change in the scholarship requirements for Purdue however it seems that it’s the place for me ^.^

Well, if you plan to attend and you’re interested in doing research in nanotech, check out the SURF program next year. It’s a summer research program (freshmen can apply) and they have plenty of nanotech-related opportunities available. This year, we have about 25 students working on the nanoHUB project.

Also, if you have any specific questions about EE, you’re more than welcome to PM me.

Thanks
My current issue is -
While I may have good scores on my testing (finally got my AP scores! lol.)
I don’t have any background in electronics or nanotechnology.
How important are these backgrounds?

Don’t worry about your backgrounds. No one expects you to know anything about electronics/nanotech. That’s why you’re going to college in the first place.

If you do plan on applying to SURF/nanoHUB, just try to show enthusiasm and explain why you’re interested. I think when I applied, I said I wanted to do research to see what it’s like and I want to do nanotech because it seems like it’ll play a pivotal role.
