Getting into Rice (and NWU and Oberlin)

A double degree program results in two degrees, usually a BM or a BA in some field of music and a BA or a BS degree in some non-musical field. It generally takes five years or so to complete.

A double major program results in a single degree listing two major fields of study. It can be completed in four years if you are ambitious and hard-working.

Even though you are not interested in stand-alone conservatories, Peabody Institute has a few articles on their website that should interest you. Check out http://www.peabody.jhu.edu/692 for a much more complete answer to your question about double degree vs. double major. Look at all three of the articles referenced at http://www.peabody.jhu.edu/787 for some great background information.

Just a note of caution. Completing a double major in 4 years is very challenging and is sometimes impossible depending on the areas of study. My D is beginning a double major in vocal performance and string music education at a conservatory this fall and despite the fact that she will be taking overloads each term along with languages in the summers, she cannot finish in 4 years.

The ability to complete a double major in 4 years depends on the majors that are chosen and the requirements of the majors. Make sure you map out the requirements of each major of interest (and how often the required courses are offered) before assuming that both can be completed in 4 years.

BassDad - thank you for those articles!! They are very, very helpful.

Muscmomic- I'll keep that in mind as I visit and figure things out.
