Getting into Ross

I was just accepted into the University of Michigan LSA and I am pursuing an Economics major. Although I am absolutely ecstatic, I hold interest in the Ross school of business as well.

Can someone explain to me the process of getting into Ross after your freshman year? How difficult is it? What do I need to do to improve my chances. Etc.

Also, if there is anything I can do now as an admitted high school senior, please let me know.

If I remember correctly, Ross has changed their acceptance method to now accept more incoming freshman as pre-admits to Ross, fewer applicants will be accepted through cross campus transfer methods. Not sure if this answers your question completely.

Yes may apply as cross school transfer at the end of freshmen year. As now 80% of seats are filled by pre-admitted, there is not many seats left for sophomore transfer. Nevertheless, those applied for pre-admitted but not accepted are not eligible for the transfer application. So it is hard to say if it would be more or less competitive in sophomore transfer than a few years ago.

@billcsho 80% of seats are filled by preferred admission? According to the profile, 565 students enrolled via preferred admission and 403 were accepted as cross campus transfers. I bet most of the cross campus transfers enrolled.

@“AKK@uofm” well yes more students are accepted through preferred admission. But more students apply. According to the profile, the acceptance rate for preferred admission is about 18% and 35% for cross campus transfer. It seems that cross campus transfer is significantly less competitive.

Now, what confuses me is that the class size is only 625 students. Could either of you explain to me how that works considering that 565 enrolled through preferred admission and 403 were accepted as cross school transfers? Also, if there is a new acceptance method that is enforced, can you guys please explain to me? I’m assuming that the numbers on the profile in the link would become meaningless if there is a new process.

@tytbound You are looking at data from before and after the transition. In 2017, most of the sophomore at Ross are admitted by cross campus transfer while most of the freshmen are by pre-admission. Cross campus may be less competitive by number but not in reality. The applicant pools are successful freshmen at UMich instead of high school graduates before admitted to UMich. Do you think it is easier to get Olympic gold medal than NCCA champion?

@“AKK@uofm” You’ll need to apply during your second semester of freshman year. Be alert for when the application period begins. No, there is nothing you should do now as a HS senior. In fact, Ross is very clear that the intra-college transfers are selected from among students who did not previously show an interest in business. IOW, your position is that once on campus you became interested in business and learned about the opportunities at Ross. Try to get at least a 3.8 GPA both semesters. Definitely get an A in your economics classes.

^ NCAA

@brantly I wish I had known this earlier… I would have loved to be a cross campus transfer into Ross… but that’s ok I’m happy with Data and Information Science now :slight_smile:

@AKK@uofm ack. I meant @tybound

@billcsho what does NCAA mean, besides the obvious?

@brantly Just analogy to compare between the previous Ross regular admission and the current pre-admission to response to tytbound who thinks the former is less competitive due to higher admission rate. There are a lot more teams in NCAA than in Olympics but it is still definitely harder to get a gold medal than winning a championship in NCAA due to the different levels of competitors.

I’m afraid then as I had a business internship in high school I just didn’t apply to Ross originally meaning it’s not as if I suddenly wanted to go into business. Will this hurt my application?

I dont know if I will be able to get a 3.8 gpa this semester as I am probably getting a B/B+ in EECS. I will probably get at least A-'s if not A’s in Econ 101 and 102 along with math at least tho. In other words, I don’t think I’ll get below an A- except for EECS 183 maybe.
