Getting into Rutgers

I had a C average in both grade 9 and 10. I am probably going to get a 3.6 gpa in grade 11. In senior year.. i will get a 4.0 no doubt.. since the reason why my grades are so low is because i did not take school seriously. What SAT score should i get minimum?

what are my chances?

Aim for a 1700 SAT score at least. 1800+ would be better. What is your cumulative weighted GPA (when you average it all together)?

cumulative GPA as of now? it would be around a 2.6-2.7
I can have around a 2.9-3.0 by the end of high school.

I have to go talk to my guidance counceler because i finished grade 9 and 10 in canada… and the studies there were MUCH MUCH harder… is that going to help me any?

what SAT score would put me in a comfortable position? i know at least 1800… but would a score of 2000 show them i have more than my grades show?

ohh 2.7? well thats gonna be a problem assuming you want to go to rutgers NB and rutgers only looks at grades till the end of junior year so if its 3.0 by then , then your set with an 1800+ (it really wont matter if u get over a 2000+) SAT but you may be able to get into SAS with 2.9? 1800+? BUT you must apply early like october-november like at the end of october …early as u can…its like impossible to get into pharmacy, business school (you’ll make it to the one in Newark though)… but it all comes to this

Try for Max GPA atleast 2.9^ prefer 3.0
1800+ SAT
Apply Mid-October
Apply to SAS, Engineering but you will make it anywhere in camden and newark btw

Yes i do want to go the rutgers NB. I also want to go into the life sciences program (premed?)
so a score of 1800+ would get me into the life science program? (or should i aim higher?)

DrKhan, I think you would need higher than a 1800 if your GPA would be a 2.9/3.0 since you want to get into the New Brunswick campus. Rutger’s standards have gone up a lot and if you want to redeem that low GPA of yours, your going to need a great SAT score. Try to get as much leadership positions also or participate in sports. I’m not sure when the applications are available but try to send it out as early as possible. If you can finish your SAT’s prior to the start of senior year then that would be great since you can send everything early.

Worse comes to worst, you can always apply to both New Brunswick and Newark.

If you get rejected from New Brunswick but get into Newark or Camden, go to Newark or Camden, try and aim for a GPA around 3.6 or higher (3.8 would be even better).

Then apply for a school-to-school transfer at the end of the Spring semester of your first year (the deadline is a month after school finishes, so you’ll have at least two semesters of grades to show them) so you can start your sophomore year in the Fall at Rutgers New Brunswick (if you get accepted).

But good luck for now. Try to perform your best on the SATs.

Jimgotkp - alright i will send my application as soon as i can. Should i be aiming for a score of at least 2000?

MushaboomBlue - Alright, i will look into that… only nb campus has the life science program right? so when i apply to newark and camden… do i apply as an undecided major? and then transfer after the first year?

keep the info coming guys… i need as much as i can get and thanks a lot for replying
what ec should i partake in? i am starting to volunteer at a dentist clinic

I wouldn’t worry too much about loads of ECs to impress Rutgers. Honestly, they are mostly concerned about numbers like SAT scores, class rank, and GPA. I won’t discourage you though because I think that you should do ECs that pertain to your field of interest to gain experience because it certainly is NOT a waste of time.

Anyway, if you plan to transfer after your first year, check the life sciences website for New Brunswick for your intended major. Check their recommended course plan sequence for first years and use that to match with Newark’s course offerings. You’ll mostly be expected to take general courses like biology, chemistry, pre-calculus/calculus – all which are offered at Newark:
[Division of Life Sciences: Rutgers University](http://lifesci.rutgers.edu/)

Provided below is a link for the department at Newark if you are interested (maybe you might decide that you don’t need to transfer to NB):
[Federated Department of Biology](<a href=“Center for Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience | Rutgers SAS-Newark”>Center for Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience | Rutgers SAS-Newark)

I don’t know too much about Camden, but because it is a smaller campus, they don’t have as much resources like New Brunswick and Newark. I would suggest Newark over Camden because at least Newark does have research opportunities. In addition, they have accelerated programs with UMDNJ and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Anyway, good luck! It would be great if you get accepted to the New Brunswick campus the first time around! But back up plans always come in handy when all else fail =)

Thanks for the information
If i want to get into life science… is pre med my undergrad major then?

Have you ever gotten a “D” as a final grade in a class? I have heard that you will not get into NB with a D on your transcript, even with a decent overall gpa.

I had gotten a D for a math elective, but had still gotten into Engineering. I guess it just depends on person to person. My essay was a strong counterbalance to my overall statistics, while my extracurriculars were only average.

yes i have gotten a D in grade 9
guys, i think my weighted gpa will be over a 3.0. Will that be of any help?
if i get a 2200 on the SAT, do you think i would have a chance of getting into new brunswick pre med?

If your academic classes are strong along with those, then you’ll definitely get into SAS. May I ask, did you get a D in an academic class or elective class?

I got a D in an elective class. I have been reading around here and it seems as if it is very tough to get into Rutgers NB. Should I set my goal for Newark or Camden? How hard is it to get into those two campuses?

please give as much information as you can and thanks a lot for replying guys!

also, I am a sophomore by age, and have almost enough credits to be a senior.

That was exactly what I did, though I regretted applying to Camden in place of New Brunswick SAS (I hate Camden as a town and I had a shot). I was calmed after I got accepted into Newark but under the urge of my mother, desperately hoped for a waitlisting from New Brunswick. When I got my acceptance, I almost immediately accepted (a bit surprised as others with higher statistics got waitlisted) as I knew that it was my last sip when the SUNYs (Binghamton, Stony, Buffalo) didn’t offer me additional aid for Engineering.

To be honest, my statistics were horrible with a 1630 SAT (now takes SAT out of 2400) with a 3.1 Weighted GPA from an unranking school. My highest section was math at 650 with a low English score (writing was above mediocre). However, I committed to a lot of other activities such Moderating a popular forum and committed to 3 important clubs with significant outcomes (Academic League 1st, 2nd in the county). I also volunteered a good number of hrs (around 120) for three programs. My advice is to get a 600+ on the math section of the SATs to be even considered for Newark or New Brunswick and spend a great deal of time on your essay. I had to rewrite mine 3 times entirely, but think of every way to provoke insight and allude diversity.

Best of Luck!

honestly… you wont get accepted to SAS with 1700 and 3.0… You atleast need like 3.4 and 1700 or 3.0 and 2100…(seen people getting rejected with 3.7 GPA and 1650 SAT)

i got in with less than a 3.0 and 2090

yea close to 2100 lol

DrKhan,
when you write that essay you should be saying something about the studies in Canada being much much harder than where you are now.

Also to back it up, I would have the guidance person from the school in Canada send something that confirms your claim. They have to send their transcript anyway, don’t they?
