Did anybody get into Harvard/Yale or ANY Ivy with a D, or a C? OR EVEN A FEW D’s or C’s?

Probably not... unless you have really good reasons (like a serious illness), or you have amazing stats (like all 800s/1600s, and a 5.0), or if you discovered something great (like a machine that allows animals to talk).

And when I first read this thread's title, I thought you had something called a DORAC- I was like "Ooooooo... what's that? It sounds fancy." But then it turned out to be grades, so nevermind.

No "Dorac" here, but thanks. Anybody else?

I'm pretty sure there have been some. I know my grandfather was a terrible student, but he got into Harvard because his father managed to pull some strings (he was a legacy).

Pretty lame if you ask me, but it happens. Probably more often than we think.

Are you talking about academic classes only? I was accepted to a few Ivies with a C in physical education freshman year.

i'm curious too - i didn't apply to hyp, but i did go for penn and some hard core lacs, with a d this one time in spanish. which was stupid. i can totally speak spanish (750 sat2/ib score of 6) and i even enjoy the subject (language immersion programs, etc) i was just stupid. but i have great scores and ecs and everything else. anybody know whether they forgive that much?

I would say that they do it---for URMs.

"Yale could use a new international airport Mr. Burns."

damn it i am in the same boat. i received my first and only C in math 9th grade. However, I had moved interstate so that was my reason. I really hope these schools take that into consideration as all my other stats kick ass

Potomac, a C in math in 9th grade will not keep you out of any school. I have seen kids with that kind of situation get into HPY. It may contribute to keeping you out and is an easy reason to give, but the truth of the matter is that if you catch the adcom's eye and they want to admit you, that C would not be an issue.

I had loads of Fs and Ds in my time (3 Ds last year, 2 this year- am in 11th grade out of 13 grades, thats the IB program) but my admissions officer says thats no biggie if I work my ass off in the next 2 and a half years and get As and be good in rugby.
wont be a prob for top schools that is.

Edit: by admissions officer i mean guidance counselor.

Nick, I think you should talk to another counselor. 5 Ds won't be a problem at top schools? That isn't true and maybe your counselor just doesn't know. You need to adjust your sights.

don't reason with nick, he isn't willing to accept fact
rugby is nothing so special, and it will not get you in to top 20 even with a perfect gpa, muchless 5Ds

No im not willing to accept the fact that i have to 'settle' for anything less than i want. thats a horrible state of mind and will get me nowhere in life. if theres one thing ive learnt in life, is that you gotta aim for your dreams, even if they are unrealistic or seemingly impossible.
remember, there are two types of people in the world: the realistic, who accept the world as it is, and those who don't. the latter make things happen.

Nick, always dream big and go for it. Apply away to your dream schools. But always have a realistic back up plan.
