Getting into the UC schools

Hey guys, Im in 11th grade and a resident of Florida, and I really need some reassurance. I want to apply to the UC schools, one of them being UC Berkeley. Do I have any chance of getting accepted with these stats?......

12th grade: (this is what I plan on taking)
2 college classes during summer
5 college classes during my first semester plus the 4 high school classes
I plan on getting A's for all of these, hoping my gpa increases to a 3.75 unweighted and 5.???? or hopefully 6.???? weighted)
I also plan on taking many clubs

I plan on taking my SAT's during the fall

What do you guys recommend I do?

How does your school calculate weighted…

You need to calculate your UC GPA but I’d say you have a chance, especially if you can come up with the $50+k/year. And assuming 2 K SAT’s, good essay, leader EC’s and maybe two subject tests.

How would I calculate the UC GPA??

Hey c’mon; You want to go to Cal? …I’ll find it. BRB.

Ooops!

or

Generally, extra points only for AP’s if you are out of state.

Thank you so much Shrinkrap

by the way, I’m a low income individual. if I get accepted to any of these schools, will they grant me financial aid?? i seriously wont even be able to pay for one semester.

Here is Cal’s profile. you will need a better then 4.1 Weighted UC GPA for a fifty percent chance.

http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/campuses/files/berkeley.pdf

if I get accepted to any of these schools, will they grant me financial aid??

No; well maybe a Pell Grant ($5,550.). That’s one of the reasons they accept out of state students.

Seriously, I’m no expert, but this seems to be the common wisdom. I think a few OOS kids have gotten enough grants to go in the past, but those seem to be Ivy caliber kids.

Good luck!

You need the visual and performing art requirement.
The closest you have is speech but it doesn’t qualify.
(This is from the UC website)
Drama/Theater. Examples of acceptable courses include acting, directing, oral interpretation, dramatic production, dramaturgy/history/theory, and stage/lighting/costume design. Examples of unacceptable courses include speech, debate, or courses in other disciplines that require students to perform occasional skits.

gross, C’s

gonna have to work on those personal statements

how is it possible to get straight A’s and have an unweighted GPA under 4? Also, how is it possible to get a GPA over 5, let alone over 6? GPA is an average and you don’t add the extra points for APs after averaging…

if this is a public school, unless you have amazing essays, no chance for ucb (or any ivy). sorry.

What’s the mean GPA for your school? If it’s a very tough school where everyone gets screwed over, then your low GPA is acceptable.

If not, aim for a very very high SAT Score (I’m talking 2300+ here), and write outstanding essays. Also in your essays you could talk about what made you have bad grades, and how in spite of that, you will be a positive contribution to UC Berkeley.

Overall, there’s a low chance, but certainly not impossible. You have to dazzle the admissions committees in one way or another.

i dont understand how a 3.6 unweighted and 5.2 weighted gpa is considered low. and im only a junior so its gonna go up. how isnt this acceptable for the UC schools???

You should realize that most kids who get into Berkeley have close to straight A’s, with maybe a few B’s here and there. Getting C’s is very rare. The only kids that got C’s went to absolutely ELITE high schools, had VERY high test scores, or had some super unique situation that justified their low grades.

Berkeley’s admissions process is more GPA-based than the processes of many of the private schools, and you need to be wary of that when you decide where to apply.

Frankly, I wouldn’t admit someone that got a C in precalc…

@david1994

Sir, recalculate your gpa using the UC system. The maximum gpa you can have is 5.0, assuming every single class you take is an AP/Honors/IB course as listed in the UC system and you receive an A in every single class. NOTE THAT THIS APPLIES TO ONLY 8 SEMESTERS OF HONORS COURSES. So, for example, if you take 16 semesters of honors/ap/ib courses, the maximum gpa you can have is a 4.5 (assuming you get an A in all courses).

A (honors) = 5.0
B (honors) = 4.0
C (honors) = 3.0

A (regular) = 4.0
B (regular) = 3.0
C (regular) = 2.0

I hope you understand how to do this…

By my calculations, your 10th grade GPA is around 3.44 unweighted, and your 11th grade GPA is 3.09 unweighted…you’re kidding yourself if you think that’s Berkeley level.

ok singh2010, so ur basically telling to forget about the UC schools and have me apply to schools like harvard and stanford…by the way, im not putting any of my personal information up on the internet to justify for my C’s…

I never mentioned Harvard or Stanford. I’m talking about private schools with comparable admissions statistics to Berkeley…more in the range of Georgetown, USC, Tufts, etc. They might be more forgiving of lower grades.

i used the system that mitigated explained and i got a UC gpa of 4.2. i combined both sophmore and junior year.

I have 8 AP/IB/HONORS/College courses where i got A’s in and 7 where I got B’s in and 4 which I got C’s in

I have 1 regular course with an A

I added everything up and got 84. i divided that by the total number of classes and got 4.2…did i do it right??
