Getting into the University of Arts & Sciences

Okay. I'm a college sophomore and I'm looking to transfer into the University of Pitt for the fall of my Junior Year...except I've got a bit of an issue.

Currently, I'm enrolled as a sophomore at Ursinus College...but I won't be next semester. I found myself caught up in some disciplinary trouble (a stupid, drunken mistake - I burned someone with a ciggerette) which resulted in my expulsion (this may seem extreme, but the incident escalated and led to the student who I burned assaulting me (punched a bunch of times) and that's when it all became a disciplinary matter.

I appealed to the President and am being allowed to finish up my semester and get my grades, and as far as I understand it, nothing about this dismissal will show up on my transcripts, but obviously I am not allowed to return to Ursinus next semester, so I'll spend next semester at Temple (pending my admission.)

Basically, I'm just wondering how this will work out in terms of transferring to Pitt - do you think they'll ask questions as to why I left Ursinus mid-year to go to Temple? Will the move make me seem shakey academically?

Other stats about me (if they help):
I'm African-American
My GPA last semester was 3.6 and I made Dean's list, I'm also on track to make it again this year (technically, although I doubt they'll be sending that letter home to me)
My highschool GPA was around a 3.4, ranked in the top 50% of my class
SAT total score was around 1650

Thank you for the help

You have a fairly complicated case, and I don’t think anyone here can really predict what Pitt will do or think. Give it a try, and see what happens.

But to transfer, don’t you need recommendations from current profs?

Maybe you’ll like Temple and opt to stay there.

Well I had planned on getting recs mostly from my Ursinus professors who know me better and have taught me longer.

I’m not really worried about not liking Temple, I’ll be treating it like a job -a place I have to go everyday to get through classes to get my degree, etc. But I won’t be living on campus because my family lives close enough to make such a matter irrelevant (I live in Northeast Philly, I’m a stone’s throw away from Temple) and that’s what I’ll really miss most - the social aspect of being in college. Meeting new people, parties, doing different things with organizations, campus traditions.

The reason I didn’t go to Temple in the first place is because it didn’t really have what I was looking for when I wanted to college (not that it’s a bad place, it’s just really lacking the traditional campus environment, being in the city with everything so spaced out and the staggering number of students) and the only reason I went to Ursinus is because of all the money they threw at me, a decision I’ve regretted since day one.

I kind of just want to use this as my chance to take the college search process as seriously as I should have the first time.

“and the staggering number of students”

Pitt’s not exactly a small school…

It’s got less students than Temple, by quite a bit, and it’s got the major I dream about.

Seems as though FA is important to you. Are you aware that IS transfer students are not likely to be given generous FA?

It was never as important to me as it was to my parents. I chose Ursinus as a way of helping them out financially despite not really wanting to go to the school. Seeing as I’ve pretty much gone to school for free the last year and a half, I’m willing to ask them to make the extra sacrifice for me so that I can finally go where I want to go and do what I want to do.

“I found myself caught up in some disciplinary trouble (a stupid, drunken mistake - I burned someone with a ciggerette) which resulted in my expulsion (this may seem extreme, but the incident escalated and led to the student who I burned assaulting me (punched a bunch of times) and that’s when it all became a disciplinary matter.”

Yeah, please dont go to my school…

^^^^
C’mon. It’s not as though Pitt has only perfect angels attending. The Op made one mistake. What do you say we cut him a break and either “chance” him or let it go?

^^^
dionte goes (or went–I don’t know if he graduated) to Temple, but I suppose that’s beside the point…

OP, I think your best bet is to look at the list of all information required of transfer applicants. If there aren’t any questions about why a student left his former school, you should be fine. If this isn’t the case, and they give you the ‘third degree,’ just explain your situation–Pitt is pretty understanding. Good luck to you!

LOL Now I understand. When you go to school with moral standards as lofty as Temples’…

Give him a chance. My friend got suspended because he came to a dance with a friend who was drinking. He was not under the influence but now he may not get into Pitt.

That doesn’t make a bit of sense.

Obviously sarcasm isn’t a part of Temple’s curriculum…

^^^^
My point exactly.

Pitt would be classified as a spaced out city school with staggering numbers of students. It is in a much safer environment than places like Temple, though. The School of Arts & Sciences are tough with credits and GPA. I have no clue about disciplinary problems.
