What extra tests do I have to take to get admitted to a college like Durham, Oxford, or Cambridge? Help!

You won’t need extra tests for Durham, unless you are applying for medicine.

For Cambridge, you may be required to take the TSA (Thinking Skills Assessment); this will depend on what college you apply to, and for what subject.

Oxford have subject specific tests that home students (I’m not sure about international students) take to determine if they get an interview.

Probably do well on your APs or IBs as those tests will be the basis of your conditional offer should you do well on your interviews (Oxford and Cambridge).

Take all the APs or IBs for the subject you are interested in studying.

For Cambridge, you’ll need to take the STEP exam if you are planning to study mathematics.

At Oxford you have to take some easier form of an entrance exam, (still hard though), but those tests normally follow after you have received an offer, so they’ll tell you.

Most important thing is to do well in all the classes related to your desired subject to get an interview, then do very well on your interview to get offer.

Curious… what subject are you planning to study?

There is a thread here on getting into UK universities which I have responded to and so have others. You can generalise this advice.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/study-abroad/930404-would-i-competitive-admission-following-uk-universities.html

Amazingly, by the power of Google, you can find websites for all of the universities you mention. These sites will tell you exactly which extra tests you need to take for admission, which are dependent on subject-applied for and colleghe applied to (you will also find out the meaning of “college” in this context, which is a bit different from the US. Colleges are more like dorms. A small part of a bigger university). For may courses you will not have to take any special admissions tests. If you shoose to take AP/IB tets to enhance your chances of admission, that is your decision but they won’t ask you to specifically take these.

It seems you are at the very beginning of the research process. You should know that if you intend to apply for admission in 2011, the Oxford/Cambridge application deadline will be around 15th October 2010.
