Getting into University of Texas at Austin

Hello College Confidential, I just want to know what are my chances of getting into UT Austin? And if I should retake the SAT in chances of getting a higher score as well, or even taking the ACT or SAT Subject tests as well.

I am a Texas resident, and go to a Fort Bend ISD high school. My SAT Scores total to 1960 (730 Math/650 Reading/630 Writing).

I currently only have 12 college hours from AP exams but am expected to get at least 30 by the end of senior year.

My class rank is the top 8% which is 1% short of the auto admission rate unfortunately.

I am also in several honor societies and multiple clubs but not in any leadership positions, with summer working experience.

Please tell me if I have a good chance at making it in or not, and any advice on applying.

Since UT-Austin admits 75% of its class through the Top 7% plan, only a quarter of the spots are open to non-top-7% people. And some of those spots are reserved for athletes, out-of-state students, and other students that the school wants. That makes the remaining spots very competitive. I think you have strong ECs and a good SAT score. Maybe you could take it again to bring it up. It won’t hurt your application.

If you don’t get into UT, you could still go to A&M, where you will for sure get in as long as you’re in the top 10%. There’s also Texas Tech, which is pretty generous with merit scholarships to good students like you. There are also some great private schools in Texas such as Baylor, SMU, TCU and others.

The one word that comes to mind when I think about UT is “arbitrary”. This is directed toward admitting students either not in the top 7%, or from private schools that don’t rank.

I know several kids who were accepted into schools like: Rice, Standford, Wash U, UC Berkeley, Vanderbilt, Duke, Wake Forest, etc that either were rejected out right by UT or were offered the cap program. I also know kids who were ranked outside of the top 25%, and who had mediocre test scores that got in. UT admissions makes no sense to me. I have heard that applying early and making an appointment with you UT admissions counselor can help.

As oreogril12 said, there are many great private schools in Texas,. With your test scores I know SMU, TCU, Baylor, St Ed’s (right there in Austin), and Austin College will offer you scholarship money. If you want a larger school, you are an auto admit to A&M and will get scholarship money at all other UT campuses

If you want to go out of state, your current scores will waive out of state tuition at KU, U Arkansas, and many, many others. At U Alabama you will currently receive 16,716 per year off tuition, and if you can raise your SAT by 20 points they will give you a full tuition scholarship. You will receive at least $14,000 from the University of Nebraska which will give you a $10,000 savings over UT (tuition, books and housing).

Good luck!
