Getting into USC Film Production?

Here's my info:
I'm a junior at an art school in NYC and I'm majoring in Film and Media.
I've got a 93.22% avg weighted, 91.8% unweighted from first semester this year and I was on honor roll.
I sail, and have been since I was 8 years old and started a team at my school (even though technically I'm the only person on the team hahha)
I rowed competitively on a crew team for two years, 6 days a week (until I quit due to injury)
I volunteer at the Paley Center, a film and media museum-type thing in Manhattan, I do extra film editing for my teachers and I help out at auditions/parent teacher conference, and I volunteered at the Queens Film Festival. And I teach sailing to kids during the summer (but that's a job)
I'm applying for the Tribeca Film Fellowship and entering a film into Our City, My Story competition (fingers crossed for both)
I'm currently in AP Calculus and next year I'll be in AP Literature (my school only has 5 APs total
I got a 490 on my Chemistry SAT II, and I'm taking English and US History in June/October.
My first SAT was this November and I got 550 Math, 570 Writing, 590 Reading. I'm taking them again in March and expecting to break 1800. I'm also taking the ACT in April but I have no concept of what I'll get.

I know my scores aren't the best and my volunteer work isn't great but I was extremely committed to rowing freshman and sophomore year and had no time to do anything else but filmmaking is my passion and I'd love for nothing more than to go to USC for production. I know everyone says it's a waste of money because people who didn't go to film school get great jobs like that but I just really want to do film somewhere that takes it seriously. I just love it so so much. I filled out the sailing recruiting form but got nothing back yet :/

Bump.
Help please?

Your SAT is too low. Not even worth applying. You need to move it up to around 2100. To be honest, they wouldn’t even read your application. They would see that score and throw it in the trash. You would not get into any top 100 schools with that score.

Have you taken the ACT? Oh, I see you will take it. You may prefer it. Get a study guide and practice taking the test beforehand. Don’t go in blind. There are also many ways to increase SAT and ACT scores by self study, tutoring or classes. You still have time to increase your score. There are several good threads on this site to help. USC takes a holistic approach when evaluating applicants and one area of weakness will not necessary eliminate you from consideration. You do not have to send SAT IIs to USC. I would suggest only sending SAT IIs if they are very good. Also, for your major, it is your portfolio that is most important. I think you have a good chance from reading about your ECs and seeing your obvious passion! But study to try to raise those SAT/ACT scores. Retake the test you do better on. You can re-take the test(s) in June or in the fall. You can do this!

Actually, production does not care about stats, it’s mostly about your portfolio or something similar. One mom post her daughter had very low stats but get in(1700+). However, I still think your SATs are too low, take the ACT instead.

Although I agree porfolio is key, I have read (on CC) that you must be able to be accepted by regular school as well as by SCA. So, if stats are low, it could be challenging, but that SCA can negotiate for a candidate. Not sure if this is true, but read it on this site. And again, it is a holistic review.

Yeah, I didn’t mean to be rude or anything I was just saying the SAT is wayyyy too law. Move it up, you have to be accepted by the regular school first. The suggestions for the above two posts are very good.

^ Thanks. It’s nice to see ambitious high school freshman on the site. You will be very ready for college in 4 years.

Hey, just to update this thread, I got in
I was accepted for Critical Studies for the Spring of 2014.

What did you end up getting on your SAT or ACT?

Also what do you think got you in?

Oh interesting! Did you retake anything?

@sophiacityx, congratulations! That’s wonderful! Thank you for the update. Nice to know. :)
