Getting into USNA

I am trying to go to Annapolis but would like to know if anyone with above average knowledge about the admissions and/or attended could give me helpful advice. I am a junior in high school. I know my congressmen pretty well so I'm not very worried about a nomination thankfully. He just got elected last year and he will be in his 3rd year by the time he can nominate me if that makes a difference. Here is my rough transcript:
-I will have a 4.5 gpa weighted and 3.625 unweighted by the end of junior year for all three years combined
-10% in class ranking
-ACT 26 composite
-IB Program

-Extra circulars by senior year:
•governors page for a week
•vp of young republicans and president for two years
•vp and president of Key club
•caps camp (school run camp), staff, co-head
•camp sea gull sailing counselor and sailing CILT (top east coast sailing camp)
•xc for three years
• jv and varsity lacrosse
•newspaper reporter and editor
•nc youth and government
•Latin honor society secretary, president
•service club
•national honor society
•class council, student body secretary/treasurer and Vice President of the student body

Tips besides make better grades and what are my chances.

What APs have you taken? How strong are you in math and science?

I’ve taken ap environmental science, IB history of the Americas, IB English, IB physics, IB math sl, IB Theory of knowledge, IB business management and Latin up to year 4. So I will have done by the end of senior year 1 ap sophomore year, 5 IB junior year and 6 IB senior year. My math and sciences are average which would mean A’s but mostly B’s.

I think you have a strong chance, but you might need to get that test score up a few points.

Your sailing is a plus, your leadership is very good, and your athletics look fine. Your academics are strong. Do you want to do Engineering? Navy likes engineers.

Besides all that, do you truly wish to be a naval officer? That is what it’s all about. Do you have a good sense of what military life is like, both in school and later? I think some candidates get caught up in the prestige and the scholarship, and forget that this is a life they are choosing, not just a school. If this is your calling, and you are committed, show that in your essays and your interviews. Also familiarize yourself with military history, and current military events and important people.

Good luck!

Navy: Reach

Alright thanks. I appreciate the advice. Any things I could participate in that gives me any sort of edge?

Really try to get that ACT up to 30. If your parents will pay for a good private tutor, do it. It’s money well spent.

ECs look pretty good. You test score is pretty low by service academy standards though. They usually average closer to 30 for appointees. Also, 3.6 uGPA is on the lower side of average, although a tough IB/AP course load helps offset that a bit.

Apply and find out.

Try to attend the USNA’s summer program. The application opens in mid-January. That will give you a taste of what the academy is about. Here is a link. [Office of Admissions | Summer Seminar](http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/nass.htm)
