Getting into UT at Austin OOS

I'm a junior out of state. My unweighted GPA is a 3.6. I am going to receive the Full-IB diploma. My SAT is around 1950 (I can get higher). I've been dancing for 13 years now and put in about 20 hours a week. I perform all around the east coast for charities and for the needy. I also have been teaching dance for 4 years. I'm in Leadership and Key Club. I participated in People to People Europe.

Also -a side note- I have connections to UT. A good family friend works there. If I have his recommendation and another recommendation that is from a CEO in Texas will that help any?

Since UT instituted it’s top 10%/8% rule, I haven’t really seen anything that says what the admissions office is looking for in other students. You should probably ask the family friend what he knows about the process. Based on the students I know who got in and who didn’t, it seems pretty random to me.

It’s hard to get into UT as an OOS student. I’m guessing that an OOS student must be hooked in some way…a needed athlete or something.

Is your family willing to pay the high OOS costs at UT …about $47k per year? If not, then it won’t be do-able anyway.

my family is willing. Actually my dad was planning on moving back down to texas after i go to college (no matter where I go). I just got an email back form the friend and he gave me a pretty in depth list of things i need.

After you get in, would you be willing to share the list?

my OOS son was just accepted last week into the CNS computer science program. The UT website indicates almost half of OOS applicants are accepted, but represent only 10% of the university population.

His stats are 34 ACT, National Merit scholar, AP Scholar with Distinction (12 AP classes), varsity swimming, community service 4 years, unweighted GPA 3.3/weighted 4.0. His SAT was 2070, Math 2 800, Chem 750. Other kids were notified earlier than he was, but he literally applied Nov. 30 for the Dec. 1 deadline and didn’t have time for the honors program applications. We totally screwed up not putting down a housing deposit – that is critical if you want a decent dorm, apparently.

we had no hooks at all, and have not yet visited the school to decide if attending.

to sadilly: I most definitely will! IF I get in haha
to nuum83: Your son and I have almost the same stats!

Closing, please post Chances threads on the dedicated What are My Chances? forum.
