Getting into UT COLA?

So I am in the middle of my sophomore year, applying to transfer in the spring of 2016. I have a 3.6 GPA, have taken multiple courses toward my anticipated degree (Anthropology). I am also apart of the Anthropology club at my school (I am Secretary of the club). I have some volunteer and extracurricular activities but nothing too spectacular. I do believe I demonstrate a positive academic trend. I made a C my first semester but have only made all As and 2 Bs since. I am pretty nervous because UT is my dream school. My essays were what I would consider coherent and personal. In one of my essays I chose to explain the C I made and express my improvements since. If anyone has ever been in the same boat or similar, I would love an opinion. Thanks!

You’re right around the average for admitted students as far as GPA goes. I wouldn’t use your essay to explain one C though. You need to show them why you would be a good addition to the school, don’t tell them. Far too many students make the mistake of just listing things on their resume or transcript in their essays. Your essays will be more important than a lot of applicants since you’re right around the average admitted GPA and you have weak EC’s. Other than that you should have a decent chance with your GPA. Just spend some time crafting good essays since that’s the one thing you can improve a lot before you send in your application.

I didnt use the essay to explain the one C haha, the prompt was my “statement of purpose” and to explain valuable academic information. I mentioned the C, and how Ive improved but for the most part the essays topic was my interest in Anthropology and how UT and Austin will be of significance to my academic career, and how I feel I will fit into the culture there (as an anthropology major). Do you think this is a good way to stand out?
My other essay was to explain a significant issue to my generation, I chose sustainability of our planet as the topic.

That isn’t going to make you stand out. If you want you can send me your draft over a PM along with the essay prompt and I can look over it, but just the way you described it, it sounds like it’s all over the place. You really need to focus your essays on one particular topic or theme, and again, show them don’t tell them.
